Information about Joshua
My name`s Joshua. I read Classics at the University of Exeter during which time I studied Latin, Ancient Greek, and Ancient Hebrew.
I graduated in the summer of 2010 and went into teaching soon after. I taught at three different schools, and worked for several years as the Head of Classics at an independent school. I also worked closely with a state school to establish a Classics department from scratch by far my proudest achievement.
In 2017 I left teaching to work in banking, but I still love teaching ancient languages (and modern Greek!) and it remains my passion. I currently have time to teach 3 students a week.
My approach to tutoring has always been diverse and individualistic. No one is the same! I think teaching has to recognise that. I do not operate on a dogmatic or rigid system of tuition; I always spend the first lesson with a pupil endeavouring to find out how best they learn, and how best I can teach them.
Generally speaking I do not find it best to teach the Classical languages in the way that is traditionally upheld. I believe that learning Latin and Greek can be interesting, fulfilling and fun (yes, really!), and that most of what is tedious and dull is the manner it which it is taught.
Availability: 4:30pm onwards on weekdays. With my current work, I have space for 3 students a week, so please make sure that any requests come early on in any given term; though it is always worth asking!
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I tutored students in Latin throughout my A-levels, then while at university enrolled on the mentor scheme to help students in lower years who were struggling with Latin and Greek. Following graduation I continued tuition before promptly going off and working as a Latin teacher in an independent prep school. I moved from there to another independent school where I would eventually become Head of Classics.
During my time there I was approached by another school seeking to establish a Classics department and Latin course from scratch, and for 3 years I managed both schools` Latin (and Greek) courses. In 2017 I left teaching to pursue a career in banking, but still tutor throughout the week.
