Information about Joshua

Hello, my name is Joshua and I have been a private maths tutor for nineteen years. Maths has always been my favourite subject, and I get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction from tutoring. See below for details of my experience as a tutor / school teacher.

My teaching style:

Many children find maths as it is presented in school incredibly dull. (Just ask a few of them what they think about school maths.) So wherever possible, I like to use deep, open-ended, curriculum-relevant problems to get my students curious (see 2 examples below):

"You have 36 metres of fencing. What`s the biggest garden you can make if you are free to make it any shape you like?"

"If I tell you the sum and the difference of 2 numbers, how can you work out what the numbers are themselves?"

These sorts of problems give children the chance to explore, ask questions, make conjectures, test out their ideas, and come up with their own explanations. This is what makes maths engaging, and helps them become competent mathematicians.

Our son is very happy with the lessons. Joshua is an excellent maths tutor. He asks questions during the lesson to check my son is clear on the topic before moving on. Will definitely recommend him.
