Information about Jenny

My name is Jenny and I am looking for students in Leeds studying A-level Biology (any syllabus) and also undergraduate Biology students or even higher levels. At A level and higher, I offer Biology but not Physics or Chemistry. I currently have a Friday evening available.

I have a PhD and BSc Honours (2:1) in a Biological Science (Zoology: Cell & Immunobiology). My studies covered general Biology, Zoology, Immunology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Microbiology.

Although I began my teacher training, I found it was not nearly as suitable or enjoyable as tutoring students individually or in small groups. I really enjoyed lecturing university foundation course students working towards the equivalent of A Level Human Biology. I have teaching experience in both school and college of A-level Biology/Human Biology, as well as several years` experience as a private tutor. More recently I have gained experience of tutoring undergraduate, Master`s degree and PhD students, as well as in both AQA (including the new specification) and OCR A-level Biology. I am also available for proof-reading of essays, and helping with unfamiliar vocabulary which may be of use to those studying in a second language. Much of my tutoring work involves helping A-level Biology students prepare their exam techniques, as well as providing additional support in understanding the more tricky areas of study, dealing with application questions, and remembering vocabulary appropriately.

I will travel to locations in the Leeds area that I can access easily by public transport. I don`t mind working at weekends, as I can always record the likes of Doctor Who and the Saturday afternoon fantasy films. I am happy to teach an extra student at no additional cost, although I will need to know this before I can accept a student.

Please contact me if you need more information, and please find out the cost of paying for my details from Tutor Hunt before agreeing to be tutored by me. I am very happy to answer any question you may have, and will not be angry if a potential student/parent sends me a polite message telling me they have made other plans.

I have had good feedback from students and parents previously, for example:

“Got A`s in unit 4 and unit 5!! Thank you so much for your help!”
“Just wanted to let you know A got an A in biology. Many thanks for your help with her studies.”
“Me and P both got an A in Bio and are off to uni. Thanks for all the help!”

Availability: I am available after school hours on weekdays (currently Friday) and also have some time at weekends free. Weekday daytime is also available to students with more flexible timetables. In addition to offering regular slots for students, I am also quite happy to offer sessions as and when required providing that suitable times can be found for both parties.
I would prefer students that live within an hour`s travel by public transport. I can safely rule out going to places like Wakefield, Bradford and Dewsbury.

Willing to travel: 1 miles

Experience: I have several years` experience giving study support to students with special educational needs while working at a further education college. I began a PGCE in Biology with Science a few years ago and have experience of teaching Science at Key Stage 3 and 4, and A-level Biology in schools. I have also been working as a cover supervisor at schools in the Leeds area and I have previously taught in further education, teaching A-level Human Biology to international students on a university access course.

As a private tutor I have worked with children in key stages 1,2 and 3, but I have also tutored in GCSE Sciences, A-level Biology and Human Biology, and supported undergraduate, Masters and PhD students on Biology courses. University students struggling with complex processes such as recombinant DNA, reporter genes and PCR, or speakers of a language other than English can rely on me to put biological terms into plain English.

My own studies covered general Biology, Zoology, Immunology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Anatomy, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Evolution and Phylogeny.
I have approximately four years of experience in immunology, molecular and cell biology techniques including RNA/DNA extraction and purification, gel electrophoresis, RT-PCR, gene cloning and recombinant DNA, reporter gene assays, animal cell culture, bacterial transformation, transfections and cellular assays. Much of this is required study for A-level and undergraduate Biology students.
