As you will note from the experience box below I have had a very broad experience in education - both in schools and at advisory level in Local authority and at senior examiner level with the AQA examination board.
I am a relaxed person/educator and have worked with children of varying abilities (from SEN to gifted).
I believe one to one tuition does allow a student to progress more quickly (I used tutors for my own children in certain areas as they progressed through their local school. I only wish my parents had found some for me when I was young - the school might not have thrown me out early and I would not have had to acquire all my learning afterwards!).
I have a track record in many areas of the curriculum although English is my main degree (I have also taught ICT and examined in that subject too).
And, although my experience in teaching is broad, having taught in primary, secondary and adult education - and my standards high - see Experience below - I am quite convinced that the true craft of the teacher/educator lies in their ability to communicate on a level that the student will understand and be able to progress with.
I also have a sense of humour that hasn`t developed a great deal from childhood but does mean that I can operate quite naturally on a level that will suit most children and will encourage learning in a friendly environment.

Experience: I have worked as an LA Educational Adviser and I have taught for 26 years. For 17 of those I taught English at secondary level. I was also a head of department in a large school in Cheshire before moving on to LA work. I have taught across the age range but specialized in secondary English in School. I have also worked for over 15 years with AQA as an examiner and for several years as a Senior examiner/Team Leader in higher level GCSE English literature. My last assessment by the board adjudged me to be, according to their `Classification for the standard of Marking`, as A - Consistently Excellent.
But all this counts for naught if one is not approachable and friendly when working with students. I believe my greatest skill is the ability to bring students on who desire to achieve better than they have up to now. My LA work and exam board work does mean I have a very good awareness of standards and what a student needs to do in order to move on in English.
I have tutored in English for a few years and know that all children have different personalities. I enjoy working with them and hopefully making a difference to their life chances.
