Information about Daniel
I teach a technique-based approach to texts and essays, one which will enable your child to gain confidence in written work, targetting marks under examination conditions in a concise and clear way. By structuring their response, students soon feel ably supported by following a comprehensible routines, fulfilling the mark scheme convincingly and, I trust, relishing the opportunity to express their ideas with verve and cogency. Making fast starts and mastering timings are intrinsic to successful exam practice, and I seek to ensure that every student enters their exams replete with knowledge about the set text and tactically savvy when tackling the unseen sections. I appreciate the fact that students who have tuition may not feel that English is their strongest subject, that they often feel confused by how to construct a exemplary answer or essay, or who feel overwhelmed by the sometimes contradictory advice they have gleaned throughout their schooling: these are precisely the ilk of pupils who will benefit most from my guidance, technical skills and explanations.
One boon of tutoring for so long is that I am very familiar with every boards syllabus, umpteen drama texts, dozens of novels and hundreds of poems! In Covid-times, several boards have altered their specifications and I stay concurrent with such ever-changing nuances and requirements.
Sessions are at least an hour long. I am happy to mark a tutees work or review an assessment in advance or between our sessions. This is included in my fee. Above all, I aim to make every session accessible, interesting and progressive.
Please note: whilst I much prefer to tutor in-person and am adamant that this helps students engage fully, over the past couple of years I have tutored extensively through online platforms; once we have a established a good working rapport and if it suits your childs needs, then I am open to offering online lessons, and would reduce my fee to reflect the saving in travel time.
I hold an ICCP (an International Certificate for Child Protection) issued through the British Police. This is an equivalent to the DBS clearance with additional checks for the time I taught abroad.
Availability: I am available afternoons and evenings for in-person tuition. I can also offer weekend mornings in some instances.
The areas I generally cover are around Wallington in Sutton and between Dulwich and Clapham.
I teach two sessions per day at most.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: Having taught English Language and Literature in London and overseas schools for twenty-years now, as well as having tutored on a one-to-one basis for the past decade; I provide a wealth of experience and expertise. Moreover, I have been a teacher and Head of Department at one of the highest achieving schools in the country, which frequently results in students I tutor attaining grades in the top boundary. Indeed, on several occasions students I have taught have scored within the top ten candidates nationally at both GCSE and A-level.
DBS Check: Yes
