Information about Crofton

Biology Physics and Chemistry Tuition at AS and A2 levels also Maths and science at GCSE

Crofton offers tuition in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at AS and A2 levels and Maths at GCSE. He is a graduate of University College, Oxford where he gained his degree in Biochemistry in 1975. Having worked for over 12 years as a private tutor, Crofton tailors the tuition to the individual needs of the learner, using his knowledge as he patiently explains the processes, thereby helping the student to grasp more advanced concepts. Exam success has resulted for many students through intensive one-to-one sessions, especially through coaching in exam technique by systematically doing past papers followed by intensive analysis of answers with the mark scheme. It goes without saying that the learner’s commitment to self-study and thorough revision is the key factor in achieving good results. For this reason the student should be prepared to commit to one hours home work each week.
Crofton has helped many students to achieve the grade they need for admission to their chosen University course, including helping many students into medical and veterinary College where A grades in Chemistry are mandatory. He is experienced in the syllabus of all the major exam boards including OCR, Edexcel and AQA. Many students start private tuition after having been disappointed with their AS results and stay on through to their A2 exams, often improving their grades by two or three places. This works well on the basis of one hour’s tuition a week and approximately one hour’s homework.

Availability: I teach from home either in person (the student travels to me or online. I tend to teach weekday evenings between 1630 and 1930 or during the day if the student has availability. Lessons are typically one hour long and once a week but this is entirely flexible. I will exceptionally also work Saturday mornings. I tend to fill up rapidly after September.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: Before becoming self employed Crofton worked as an industrial research scientist in Electronic materials and Bioelectronics at the Plessey Research centre, then as a Department head (Nanotechnology Sensors) with GEC Marconi in Materials Technology until 2001. He now works as a consultant to the DTI and EC in Medical/physics research during the day while devoting the after school hours to Private tuition. With his previous experience in interviewing prospective job applicants and sourcing funding for research and development Crofton is able to help candidates at A level to present their strengths in university applications and is well placed to discuss possible progression routes.
