Information about Ben

Hi, my names Ben, I am an A&E/Anaesthetics Doctor in the North West and have been a tutor on this site since 2011.

Given my work I have a predominantly medical/ biology/ biochemical background. I have 1st class honours Human Biosciences degree from Plymouth and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree with honours from University of Birmingham.

I`m a confident and friendly tutor with several years of tutoring experience in A-level biology (AQA syllabus predominantly) in addition to mentoring in past employment and regularly teaching medical students at work. I know how stressful A-levels and GCSE`s can be and so enjoy helping others through it by giving that extra bit of help. I live human biology day in and day out in medicine so I have a good level of knowledge, which makes teaching far easier as I can connect the dots when bits are difficult and sometimes add a level of explanation you can`t get at school. I am also happy to discuss medical school, personal statements, entrance exams and interviews if this is a route you are looking at.

Please feel free to get in contact, the site emails me when you do so I`m normally able to reply quickly to answer any questions you have.

Availability: Mostly weekday evenings and weekends however my pattern is never set in stone but willing to be flexible if you are.

With the new online feature here i can be a lot more flexible, both on times and also content.

Experience: I have had experience tutoring for s number of years now with students met through this website. I took my first on at an E grade in january of their first year and they very well, finishing 2nd in their class for their A2 results. They will now have graduated from the London university they got into.

All of my students were successfully able to improve their grades and we can be quite frank about what exactly it is you need and then aim for that if that approach would work for you.

I have also mentored colleagues in work in the ambulance service, other students in university/ in hospital, and in local schools where I have given talks and helped in personal statement workshops.

I teach how I would like things explained to me...simple to understand and easy to retain. Granted that sounds a bit of a cliche but in my experience it seems to work, if you can get a good grasp of the basic principles, linking things together really helps them to stick. I find when a link suddenly gets made in your head, its a lot harder to lose than a big long list of biology terms. Unfortunately not 100% of biology lends itself to this method because it can be quite tricky at times, but there are always ways of simplifying, even if it sticks long enough just for your exam! I can adapt how I teach to how you learn best, I find making diagrams as we go are always a useful method and ones I have drawn in teaching sessions have been used by my students school teacher as learning materials in their classes.

My last tutee was kind enough to send a caption for me to put on here:

"From the first time Ben came to tutor me he was very organised and well prepared. He had already looked through the specification and brought lots of resources. Ben adapted his teaching style to what helped me the most and he wlways made the lessons fun. He was easy to talk to and was always very encouraging. Ben didn`t only improve my knowledge for biology but he also improved my confidence. Ben was always very reliable throughout the whole time i was tutored by him. With Ben`s help I managed to improve my as level results by two grades"
