Information about Brian

Personal Descri ption:
I am a PhD mathematician, with specialist interests in education, applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. I am currently self-employed as a private tutor and employed as a University Foundation tutor. I am also familiar with many aspects of secondary education from a parental perspective. Both of my children attended Netherhall School and Hills Road 6th form college in Cambridge and went on to graduate from Oxford University and London School of Economics respectively. I spent two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge and I am a recent Research Associate at the Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Teaching Experience:
I am currently self-employed as a private tutor in Mathematics and Physics and employed as a University Foundation tutor in Mathematics & Statistics at Cambridge Regional College. I have also provided tutorials for students with many different requirements especially A level and undergraduate programs as well as many varied specialist exams such as GMAT. I have lectured and tutored at University level and at the Bell school Cambridge.

Tutoring Approach:
The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student`s ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives. I think, and my results bear this out, that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be fun and rewarding.

Brian tutored me in maths for my chemistry degree. He condensed my notes by focusing on the key concepts and principles required to answer exam questions and worked through past papers with me.

My son is very happy with Brian. Brian has a good rapport with James and explains things clearly. He has helped to boost his confidence and James is always happy to attend his lessons (not how he`s felt with `after school work` in the past!).

Brian is an excellent tutor, he was able to teach some rather advanced university level mathematics to me and I learnt a lot. Highly recommended.
