Information about Alice
I began tutoring students to fund my PhD in English Literature, and I taught a range of syllabuses (OCR, AQA, CCEA, EDEXCEL) and levels (KS2, KS3, GCSE, A-Level and degree). In 2011, I became a Learning Mentor at a top grammar school in Birmingham - King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls - where I helped GCSE students with revision and study techniques, and supported those who had problems revising.
Fuelled by my love of tutoring, I trained to become a teacher, graduating from the King Edwards Consortium (which was rated `Outstanding` by Ofsted) in 2012. I completed my training at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, before taking up a teaching position at Oakham School in 2013. At Oakham, I teach A-Level English Literature,IB, GCSE and KS3 classes.
I am passionate about all aspects of teaching English, but particularly enjoy helping students to develop the craft of writing in order to express their ideas and views more carefully and clearly. Reading is my lifeblood: it inspires and enthuses me, and I love to be able to share my knowledge and passion with pupils, and to encourage them to read widely.
Overall, I am an enthusiastic, caring, and motivational teacher: I inspire my students to achieve their potential, and I work hard to develop their self-confidence, which is key to success.
Availability: During term-time, I am free Monday and Fridays from 3pm onwards, Tuesdays-Thursdays from 5pm. I am very flexible in the holidays.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have taught at a local independent for the past five years, and my results have been outstanding. My recent A-Level class (Edexcel) achieved 3 A*s, 3As and 2Bs, and my IB Higher class achieved four Level 7s and two Level 6s. In my GCSE set (Edexcel), 14 out of 23 pupils achieved A*A*, 7 achieved A*A, and 2 achieved AA.
My GCSE teaching benefited hugely from my work as an Edexcel IGCSE examiner for the English Language Paper 1 in 2015. I was also a KS2 SPAG examiner in 2016 for the National Curriculum tests.
Drawing upon my academic background, I have published 6 articles in the A-Level magazines `The English Review` and `EMagazine`, and I have sold resources to Teachit, which have been very popular.
I provide very structured and organised sessions, with clear learning outcomes and goals for my students. I work on identifying their strengths and weaknesses, in order to help them tackle their exams. I help them to develop self-confidence in their skills, and to feel confident about the material they are studying.
