Information about Alexander

Hello! I am Alex, a friendly, charismatic, reliable, and experienced tutor. I hold a MA (Cantab) in the History of Art. After Cambridge, I trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art on the post-graduate directing course. Having been a tutor for almost ten years, I am confident teaching a variety of subjects at different levels including: Humanities subjects post-graduate Master’s thesis editing/proofreading; English as a Foreign Language for Adult Learners; Undergraduate degree support (English Literature, History of Art); University entrance support (humanities subjects); Humanities A Levels and GCSEs; Common Entrance and Scholarship preparation; 11+ preparation; numeracy and literacy for younger learners.

When I was at school, I was taught by private tutors myself. I know first-hand what teaching techniques are intellectually stimulating, lasting and rewarding in the one-to-one academic environment. I have a firm grasp of the analytical tools which are essential for an holistic understanding of a variety of humanities subjects from primary to advanced levels. After an initial conversation, I will prepare a bespoke strategy of lessons and additional activities which are academically challenging as well as enjoyable. I offer a focussed and engaging educational experience tailored to the goals of each individual student.

Alongside tutoring, I work as a freelance theatre director. I have worked in London’s West End, at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough (with Alan Ayckbourn), the Orange Tree Theatre in London, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and off-Broadway in New York City.

Availability: I currently have full and flexible availability.

Experience: CASE STUDIES

¥ 2020 - ongoing Case Study: I am currently working with a student in Year 4 at The Lyceum School. We are working on his literacy (grammar, spelling, punctuation, comprehension, and creative writing) in preparation for him sitting various 11+ exams in 2022. He may sit the 10+ for City of London School in 2021.

¥ 2019 - 2020 Case Study: I recently finished supporting an aspiring ballerina who is training at The Russian Ballet School. I supported her preparations for History of Art A Level (Edexcel).

¥ 2019 Case Study: I worked with a student in Year 3 at Sandroyd School in Wiltshire. We worked together on his literacy, numeracy, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. His parents were ambitious for him to sit the Eton pre-test in the future and were keen to for him to be as prepared as possible.

¥ 2019 Case Study: I supported a student with her GCSE preparations. Together we covered English Language and Literature, French, and Geography. We tackled past-papers and refined her exam technique to give her the best possible chance of exceeding her low predicted grades (due to poor results in her Christmas mock exams at school).

¥ 2018 Case Study: I supported a student on the post-graduate MLA course at Oxford University with proof-reading her course essays. She was recently awarded a Distinction and attained the highest grade of her entire cohort.

¥ 2017 Case Study: I supported a student at Charterhouse with his English and History A Levels (OCR). He exceeded his predicted grades.

¥ 2016 – 2017 Case Study: I worked with students at a variety of schools (Eton College, St Paul’s, City of London) supporting their GCSE exam preparations. Subjects included: English, Maths, All Sciences, French, Latin, History, Geography, and Drama.

¥ 2016-17 Case Study: I recently supported a student at Highbury Grove School as he prepared to sit his Drama & Theatre Studies A Level (AQA). We focused on Antigone, Equus, and the work of Berthold Brecht.

¥ 2015 Case Study: I worked with a student in Year 2 at Chepstow House on his literacy and numeracy.

¥ 2011- ongoing Case Study: I have an 100% success record supporting students for applying to Cambridge for History of Art.

¥ September – December 2007: Assistant Teacher and Sports Coach, Arnold House School, St John’s Wood, London.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

“Thank you Alex for your hard work, passion and commitment during our daughter’s GCSE exam preparation last summer. Her predicted grades of Ds raised to B+ and she was only one mark away from achieving an A in English. I believe she would have achieved all As had she not sat the exams with Strep virus and high temperature. Our daughter is now doing A Level Film Studies and English Language because of your encouragement through your love for learning. As well as improving her academics, she acquired great life skills of confidence and self-belief. She is now much more self-motivated and hardworking. So Thank You!” - Mrs B, 24/04/2020

“Alex is a patient and engaging tutor tailoring the lesson around specific needs. I highly recommend.” - Ms A, 05/05/2019
