Information about Jack

I am an Eton-educated tutor with 11A*s at GCSE, an A in English A-level and a 2:1 in English and Drama from the University of Birmingham. I specialise in English tuition at any stage up to A-level, as well as independent schools admissions test preparation.

Having recently passed through the system myself I am highly attuned to what markers are looking for, and thus I can say that the marks are in the minutiae. The three words I instil in students in order to play to this are `decision`, `precision` and `concision`. By this I mean I teach students to make bold choices with their interpretation; that it is exact and justifiable; and that it is expressed in the most efficient and coherent way possible.

Before the first lesson I will set the student an unseen passage, normally prose or poetry, to analyse and write on. This allows me immediately to identify students` weaknesses, but just as crucially their strengths. From here the work can begin.

Developing a unique work plan and approach for each student according to their requirements, I ensure that weakenesses become strengths and strengths become strengthened.

I also offer preparation help for independent schools` admission tests. Having attended Eton I am fully aware of the methods of assessment these types of schools employ and thus am extremely well-placed to help potential candidates with their preparation. The two chief types of assessment applicants must undergo for these schools are a psychometric test - effectively an IQ test - as well an interview(s). I can assist very effectively in both these areas and would be delighted to do so.

Finally, I also write plays and poetry, having been shortlisted for the 2016 National Theatre Young Playwriting Competition, and so students looking for assistance with creative writing rather than such an exam-based focus are also extremely welcome.

Availability: Monday - Thursday
09:00 - 21:00

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: In particular I have experience working with children from my volunteering with a charity for the blind, Metro Blind Sport (MBS). In my work with them I help numerous young visually impaired people engage in specially adapted sports. Through this I have gained strong communication and people skills, and I am confident interacting with people from all walks of life.

5/5 Rating

Jack helped our son for several months with English language and literature. We got him involved as our son (Y11 - preGCSEs) was getting progressively worse, very poor scores in English language and literature of between 3-5 (per GCSE gradings). Our son`s difficulties were compounded by his significant attentional issues. Jack was consistently gentle and kind, which helped him establish a very good rapport with our son leading him to start to engage with the subject. Jack was very open to our input, such as providing easy to follow response structures for our son to follow, very easy to deal with, and has a strong grasp of the subject given his own academic background. As a result of this intervention, our son`s grades have finally stabilised at a satisfactory level over a number of recent evaluations at school. GCSEs are still some weeks off, but achieving a decent grade, once highly unlikely, now seems eminently achievable.
