Information about Robert
I am a full time musician and tutor, performing piano and guitar for a variety of projects and at venues including Glastonbury Festival, the Wales Millennium Centre and the National Museum Wales. I also compose for theatre and film, as well as providing arrangements and orchestrations for several well-known artists, including a recent Classical Number 1 album!
I`ve been teaching piano (and, on occasion, guitar) to children and adults for just under two years and have enjoyed seeing all my tutees progress over time!
I graduated from Cardiff University with a BA First Class Honours in Music and English Literature, also winning the prize for highest first year results in the School Of Humanities.
Availability: As a full-time freelancer, I am able to schedule in tuition on weekday mornings, afternoons and evenings.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: As a piano tutor I avoid adopting a `one size fits all` approach and will shape my lessons to meet the requirements and learning style of the student. Whether grades, enjoyment, classical, pop or jazz (to name a few options!) is the goal, the tutee - or the parent of the tutee - will have an influence over the direction of lessons.
Not only can I help the student develop a well rounded approach to their music exams and the constituent parts of this, but also can endeavour to teach skills that are often undervalued by formal music courses, such as playing by ear, improvisation, chordal accompaniments and so on.
I also separately offer music theory tuition where I will aim to communicate my innate understanding of the (often bewildering!) rules of music in the most approachable, engaging way.
I started formally tutoring two years ago and have received a high number of positive testimonials for my work over this time. I have also previously worked on a variety of amateur music projects where clear communication and teaching of material was an essential part of my role.
I have tutored Piano, Music (as an academic subject), Music Theory and English (Language and Literature) to people ranging from primary school age to mature learners.
I am a full-time musician and work with musicians of all ages and ability levels, meaning that I can adjust my teaching method to fit someone`s style of learning.
I also have experience of teaching English as a foreign language, having taught it on a freelance basis during my final year of University.
Feedback For Robert (6)
Rob is a wonderful teacher. I have started with him recently as a beginner adult learner and he is engaging, amiable, patient and well versed. He is extremely encouraging and knows just how to gentle push you along and approach learnings from different angles. I would highly recommend to anyone!
Robert was excellent with our son. Only a few Music Theory lessons ahead of GCSEs, but his confidence increased dramatically. Robert has a great way with students. Also very punctual and not a clock watcher- makes sure topic is finished rather than rushed. Hope to have Robert guide our son throughout A-lével music too.
Thank you Robert for being so accommodating in finding a slot for us. My son is really enjoying his lessons with you. You have been very encouraging and fun too. Thank you.
Fabulous tutor - young and enthused and my daughter finished her composition in record time!
I would 100% highly recommend especially for music composition!
Rob has been tutoring my son in the lead up to his music GSCE and in just 2 months has helped him to move from a Grade C to a Grade A. Amazing progress in such a short time. Thanks so much Rob!
