Information about Jo
My name is Jo and I am an experienced, qualified and enthusiastic teacher in the primary sector with a teaching specialism in SEN.
I have 25 years of teaching experience during which I have taught across the primary age range in a variety of schools. I currently teach part-time in an SEN unit that is attached to a mainstream school - our focus being to help our students back into their mainstream classes. Our students have a range of needs, predominately Autism Spectrum Condition and Sensory Processing Disorders ( though I have also worked with children who have Down`s Syndrome, Dyslexia, Attachment Disorders) I have developed a vast range of strategies for meeting the needs of these learners. I am very used to planning and delivering lessons on a 1:1 basis; working out the barriers that slow down learning and seeking ways to overcome them is part of my daily practice.
My lessons are planned to meet individual needs and interests. Children learn best when they are inspired and enthused by a subject and engagement is always my initial goal. Visual aids, multi-sensory teaching methods alongside an `active learner` approach are integral to my teaching style. I place a high emphasis on a child`s self belief and confidence in their learning. I want my pupils to take the skills they learn in my sessions and use them independently in their other learning environments.
I work alongside other professionals such as Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Education Psychologists. I have an up-to-date working knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Primary Curriculum. I have experience of preparing children for National Curriculum Tests such Key Stage 1 and 2 SATs and Year 1 Phonic Screenings.
Through my tutoring, I aim to provide my students with fun sessions which inspire confidence, independence and inspiration that can set them up for life long learning.

Jo has a brilliant way of getting to know and understand a child, figuring out where she can help the most and tailoring the learning accordingly. What we`ve loved is how Jo has really engaged with our sons own interests to create sessions that he finds interesting and can really enjoy whilst building on his abilities. Jo is patient and diverse in her approach to learning and has made a real difference to key areas where our son has struggled.
