Information about Nancy

I have a BA (hon) in history with a minor in English from the University of Virginia (USA) with a passion for Social History (esp American, and women`s history), Research and Writing. I`m also a qualified UK Archivist who has been published both online and in print. As I am currently doing independent research, I could offer tips and techniques for doing archival research, organising your thoughts, structuring your essay, paper or report, and managing writing projects. I teach what is most helpful for you to know depending on your personal goals. I try to make useful connections between academic work and real-life situations. In this way, English can be more attractive when applied to topics immediately interesting, and History is sometimes best studied by visiting museums and heritage sites, or looking at online collections. I would be happy to point you to the appropriate sources for your studies.

I also enjoy travelling, walking, and jazz music.

Experience: Tutoring Approach
Simply put, I try to make learning fun and relevant - encouraging students to think independently and use their imagination. I also emphasize working on memorisation techniques, and using information technology aids for taking notes, keeping the study schedule organised, and revising for exams. I`m available to tutor via Skype, Facetime and WhatsApp.

HISTORY
I feel that developing a student’s knowledge in history is best done by engaging directly with primary sources, and a variety of past and present historical references. Texts become the basis for learning, supplemented by diaries, letters, satirical sketches, paintings, archaeological discoveries, video/sound recordings, and historical documentation such as newspaper/magazine articles and legal records.

I can specialise on American and women’s history.

ENGLISH
Success in English requires extensive reading and writing measured by completed coursework, assessments, and written examinations. I recommend practicing on material that is more immediately accessible, whether in lifestyle magazines, advertorials, travel blogs, newspapers, or crime novels. In the lead-up to exams, my focus is on helping students to produce easy-to-use revision notes.

I can concentrate on style and structure for essays and reports.
