Information about Jacqueline
PRIMARY EDUCATION TUTOR - Maths and English
I have 40 years experience teaching, mainly in primary schools. I specialise in maths but have extensive experience delivering the whole curriculum across the 5 to 11 age range. I can provide SATs preparation, support children who are falling behind or provide more challenge for those who need it.
I have a range of experience with SEND children and children experiencing school anxiety and I can provide support alongside tuition.
Following a very successful career in teaching including 20 years as a head, I took early retirement two years ago. I have a BSc in Psychology and Education, a Diploma in Primary Maths Education and an NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship). I taught in a wide range of schools before holding two headships and spent ten years as a visiting lecturer in Maths on the Primary PGCE course at Leicester University. My schools have never had less than a good OFSTED grading and following retirement I took on other roles supporting schools in need.
My lessons are carefully structured for success. First and foremost, the activities are exciting, imaginative, practical and fun! Bored children dont learn. Each session begins with a short 3 question pre test to identify gaps in learning and enable me to address these. The new skills or concepts are then introduced, followed by a chance to practice and apply these before the post test at the end of the session. This shows the child they have made progress and identifies and remaining gaps so I can address these later on. Children should end the session knowing what they have learned and excited to come back for more.
My preferred style of teaching for maths involves sweets (in packets of 10), shopping, lots of counting, artwork (quilts and pet 3D shapes), measuring, cooking and real life problem solving. For English, I use fabulous books, creative stimuli for writing, LOTS of imagination as well as real life contexts and amazing pictures and artwork. I always include investigations and problem solving, which develop problem solving skills that are valuable in science, design and in life generally, as well as motivating children to explore and find out for themselves. I think children need to be excited to want to learn so my job is to find out what excites them - and to make sure all of this is in the context of a structured curriculum that ensures progress.
I involve parents throughout and provide regular progress reports and optional follow up activities. I have an enhanced DBS certificate and references available. I always begin with a free session which provides a chance for me to find out more about your child and for you to find out whether I am the right person to work with them.
Please feel free to contact me, without obligation, for further information or with any questions.
I live in Rothley with my husband and three cats. I have two adult children and two grandchildren. I have personal experience through family of the challenges presented by ASD and dyslexia and together we have learned to see these as just part of the tapestry that makes up every individual.
I love cooking and crafts and make extensive use of these in my teaching, but most of all I try to find the key to each childs learning journey and build around their strengths and hopes.
