Areas of expertise:
Being a junior doctor I enjoy coaching and advising prospective medical students. I scored highly in both the BMAT and UKCAT aptitude tests and am available for tutoring and consultation in either of these. Having been through the medical school application and excelled in the interview process recently I am able to consult on both applying (different universities, different courses, different requirements, how they weight different aspects of a prospective student) to medical school and medical school interviews.
However for those pursuing other sciences outside of medicine I have a large breadth and wealth of knowledge to invigorate their learning.
Tutoring Style
I offer a flexible client orientated service. I tailor my sessions to your aims whether that is simply achieving the top grades/getting into a certain university or developing a wider understanding around syllabus subject matter.
I am a patient tutor and also one that is very understanding of the stress and difficulties in studying for exams and obtaining a university place. My secondary school had very large class sizes (35) and inadequate teaching meaning most of my syllabus was self taught. This required a lot of effort from me but at the same time has given me a greater appreciation for difficulties in understanding that might face students.
I aim to provide a service which will allow a pupil to develop a full and wide breadth of understanding in a subject. Off-syllabus information is especially useful in writing personal statements and at university interviews. In addition by providing the student with extra information it helps them to realise how interested they are in a certain subject and if they would like to go on to study it at university.
I focus on exam technique. During my studies at school and preparation for exams I noticed -especially in the case of the sciences- that an in-depth understanding of specific subject mark schemes was required to achieve the top grades. Nowadays exam boards are very picky and specific about the wording required in an answer (science exams). Since subject specifications in the sciences are fairly limited, certain questions almost always come up.
Availability: Available for weekdays after 5 and at weekends all day.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I started tutoring 8 years ago and over that time have tutored over 50 clients for over 2000 hours. Most of my clients for the first 3 years came via tutorhunt. The last 5 years my clients have come exclusively through referrals. This cohort of clients have now progressed to university so I am back on tutorhunt as of Dec 2021.
Outside of 1 to 1 tuition I have experience teaching children and adults with moderate to severe epilepsy at the Young Epilepsy centre in Lingfield. Additionally I run a course with another medical student from Leeds that gives students the tools to excel in the medical school interview. Lastly I am in the process of rolling out a national teaching course working on developing emotional resilience and promoting wellbeing in medical students/junior doctors.
