Information about Tom
Hello! My name is Tom and I am a recent History graduate from Magdalen College, Oxford, finishing with a Double 1st.
I specialise in teaching History A-Level (particularly: US history, Medieval British History, The Crusades), English GCSE (Macbeth), and can also offer guidance for Oxbridge applications.
I am particularly interested in helping people to write clearly and concisely with a strong argument. I find this to helpful in allowing students to understand the topic at hand to the best of their ability as well creating strong exam technique. Moreover, writing with clarity and confidence is a useful skill that can be applied to any subject and life more generally. I also aim to create a relaxed student-teacher relationship where we can explore ideas freely but remain focused on continuous improvement.
Availability: I hold flexible hours to suit the student.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have experience tutoring two students previously through TutorHunt - both in History A-Level. Before this, I gained experience tutoring for friends and family across History, English and Religious Studies. In my final year at school, I helped younger students make the transition to A-Level, which can be a daunting task considering the increase in scale and depth of learning. I found a guided approach with progressive questioning to be effective in allowing students to formulate their own ideas. An emphasis on clarity is key here, when we go back over the conclusions made, ensuring full understanding. I believe that encouraging students to get there on their own (with help) also makes for more simple revision come exam time.
