Information about James
In my opinion there is no such thing as a child who does not want to learn. Reluctance to engage with education is more of a symptom of not being able to access the work, either because it is too difficult, too easy, completely dull or that they see no reason why they should learn what they are being taught. Furthermore, due to the pressure of schools to teach an overloaded National Curriculum, there is little time to give indiviuals that extra assistance to make sure they have understood what has been taught. As a result, children realise that if they keep a low profile, whatever they don`t understand will not be important by next lesson when a new topic comes along thus creating gaps in knowledge. Don`t get me wrong, this is neither the child or the teacher`s fault, but more of an error with the entire school system.
Whilst studying at university for my degree in education, I had the opportunity to work in state schools, primary schools and grammar schools and have noticed that in every one, they were faced with the same problems. Too much to teach, not enough time to teach it, and not enough time to go over areas which were confusing or misunderstood.
Many children had reached secondary school without an adequate grasp of English and Maths, leading them to find work in all the subjects daunting. I thought that this was dangerous to their future prospects as it meant that -without intervention- the required GCSE results they would need would get further and further from their grasp.
I became a tutor because I wanted to know my students well. I wanted to know their strengths as well as their weaknesses. I wanted to be able to take the time to bridge those gaps in knowledge and to build up levels of confidence so that they feel able to successfully cope with whatever future challenges, school throws at them.
My approach is simple. I get to know my students and ask them which aspects of Maths or English they find: tricky, which parts they never understood fully or what would they like to know. This combined with an assessment gives me the flexibility to tailor the tutoring to the needs of the individual. We untangle anything which has been misunderstood. We relearn the subject in a way that the student understands. Then we practice until we have the confidence in our own ability to get the answers right.
My tutoring is not just for those who struggle, but also for individuals who feel as though they need help in revision techniques, those who want to get a better grasp of literature and language, as well as those who feel as though the work that they currently do at school is too easy.

We are so pleased to have found James as a tutor for our son. Already I have overheard them chatting enthusiastically about my son`s set texts for GCSE and he has been able in a short period of time to re-ignite my son`s interest in the subject. We are really looking forward to getting back to work in September and very happy to recommend his services.
