Information about Sandra
I love listening, laughing and literature. I have been teaching for 47 years, most recently as a college Vice-Principal in North London. Semi-retired, I am now looking forward to tutoring GCSE, A level and university students online or near my home in West Sussex.
An avid theatre goer and voracious reader, I hold an honours degree from Sussex University, together with an MA in Victorian Literature from the University of Liverpool and a PGCE from Reading University.
My teaching is bespoke; I listen to what my student understands and move forward from there, looking initially at the words on the page rather than seeking literary techniques. This approach demystifies the text, giving the student a level of confidence which manifests itself in the exam room and leads to good grades.

Sandra has been an absolute godsend for my daughter over the past several months. As a dedicated English tutor, she has not only helped dramatically improve my daughter’s language skills but has done so with exceptional compassion and flexibility while supporting her through ongoing mental health challenges. From the very beginning, Sandra created a safe, non-judgmental space where my daughter felt comfortable being honest about her struggles. On days when anxiety or low mood made it difficult to focus, Sandra was incredibly patient and understanding. Academically, the progress has been remarkable. Sandra’s clear explanations, creative teaching methods, and personalised approach have boosted my daughter’s confidence in reading, writing, vocabulary, and speaking. My daughter is doing her A levels and was a bit nervous about having a teams tutor call, but Sandra put her at ease immediately, she has a very welcoming and friendly nature and you can tell she has worked with lots of young students. My daughter just needed some help with regards to how to approach the longer & essay type questions for her economics and geography mocks and finals. Although Sandra does not teach these subjects, I had approached her because with her English background I hoped she could give my daughter some help with the structure and how to approach/analyse essay type questions generally. Sandra worked with my daughter in such a way that she felt involved in the insights they made together in the session and I think this helped embed things with my daughter in a much better way than I have ever managed to do!! I could tell Sandra is a good teacher because of the way she did this with her. Also Sandra was very well prepared before our session with some links we could use with regards to marking schemes etc.. I was very impressed she had done so, and they were very helpful for my daughter. Sandra is very positive and understanding and my daughter came away feeling much more confident and with a clearer sense of how to approach/structure answering questions. I would very much recommend Sandra as a tutor.
