Information about Alexander
I have been a mathematics tutor for 10 years, working with various companies and teaching both in-person and online. My passion for tutoring began when I realized that I had a natural ability to break down even the most difficult concepts into smaller, more manageable parts. People often told me that my explanations made complex topics easier to understand, which indicated to me that I could help others succeed in their studies.
I hold an Enhanced Course in Mathematics as well as a PGCE in Mathematics from Leeds Metropolitan University. My strong academic background, combined with my extensive teaching experience, has helped me develop a deep understanding of different teaching techniques, allowing me to effectively support students of various levels and abilities.
Most of my students are those preparing for GCSE exams, but I also work with KS3 students and those in their first year of A-level Mathematics. I tailor my lessons to each students individual needs, helping them gain confidence and improve their problem-solving skills. One particularly rewarding experience was working with a student who progressed from Grade 3 to Grade 5 in just a few monthsan achievement that reflected their hard work and the effectiveness of our lessons.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of guiding many students to success. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is receiving messages from students thanking me for the grades they achieved after our tutoring sessions. Whether its a student who initially struggled with mathematics and later passed their GCSEs with confidence or someone who exceeded their expectations, these moments reaffirm my commitment to helping learners succeed.
In addition to tutoring, I work as a cabin crew member at British Airways, a role that allows me to pursue my passion for traveling and staying connected with friends around the world. Beyond mathematics, I have a wide range of interests, including languages (I speak eight), theatre, classical music, literature, and cinema.
My Teaching Approach
In my lessons, I focus entirely on the needs of the student. I usually begin by asking the student which topic they would like to concentrate on. Before diving in, I always check their foundational knowledge to ensure they have a sufficient understanding of the topic. If there are any gaps, I address them first before continuing.
I ask a lot of probing questions to make sure students have a deep understanding of the material, encouraging them to think critically and apply their knowledge. One of my key techniques is to have students explain concepts back to me as if I were unfamiliar with the topicthis helps reinforce their understanding and highlights any areas that need further clarification.
At the start of the next lesson, I provide practice questions from the previous topic to ensure that the new knowledge has been retained. I always offer feedback, pointing out where students should pay more attention, and if they wish, I assign homework, which I later check and review with them.
Exam Preparation
I specialize in preparing students for GCSE exams across various exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA, and OCR. My approach involves breaking down complex questions into smaller, manageable parts, ensuring students fully understand each step. I guide them through problem-solving strategies, helping them develop a clear and logical approach to tackling exam questions with confidence and independence.
