Information about Robert

My name is Robert and I am a teacher of History, Geography and Politics at a leading private school and college in London. I am also a Group Tutor and UCAS Councillor and Referee. Furthermore, I am a part-time History PhD candidate and Assistant Lecturer in both the History Department and Government Department at the University of Essex. I have won two awards for my research, I am a review editor for the academic journal Essex Student Research Online and have written book reviews for academic journals.

Academic Tutoring:
My teaching and tutoring experience encompasses: GCSE History and Geography; A Level History, Geography and Politics; University Foundation History and Human Geography; and first and second year undergraduate History and Government modules.

I am extremely passionate about my subjects and I have a great deal of teaching and tutoring experience, working with both young adults and adults. Over the years, I have taught every type of student, including those with English as a second language, SEN students, those with low levels of motivation and potential Oxbridge candidates. I possess a strong history of enabling academic success through a tailored approach that is founded upon a close study of pedagogical methods, and also extensive experience as an examiner at University Foundation and Undergraduate degree levels.

I have taught A-Level and University Foundation programmes for over 9 years, enabling students to gain outstanding results. For A-Levels, I have taught the subjects for a range of exam boards including AQA, CIE, Edexcel and OCR. I have taught and held workshops on exam technique and assignment writing skills for A-Level Geography, History and Politics students, including referencing. On Foundation programmes, I have written exams and assignments for History and Geography and been a lead examiner for these.

I have taught undergraduate History and Government modules at the University of Essex for 6 years. I hold workshops and seminars on two very popular first and second year undergraduate modules. I also hold academic support hours in order to assist students with their work. As part of my role here, I have been an examiner in both departments at undergraduate level. I have also taught and held employability seminars for History undergraduates. Employability is another topic I am happy to assist students with.

My time with tutees is focused solely on their individual needs, which have included: comprehension of subjects/topics; exam techniques; revision methods; the structuring and approaches to academic essays; helping tutees formulate opinions and become more analytical. I enjoy helping students apply their newly found knowledge and help them to express own evidenced arguments within written work. The latter is key to both high marks at A-Level standards and bridging the skills gap to first year undergraduate study.

In addition, I have extensive knowledge of early modern/modern History at undergraduate and postgraduate level. As a current PhD candidate and GTA, I have up-to-date knowledge and experience of writing academic essays and dissertations, so I would be more than suitable to assist undergraduate and postgraduate students with their studies. This could include: structuring dissertations; historiographies; forming arguments; discussing topics and approaches in order to assist tutees understanding of subjects and the subject matter.

Academic and Essay Writing:
To gain assistance and guidance with academic and essay writing, has to be the most common reason why parents and students wish to find a tutor. Both are creative skills but there are also approaches which examiners and exam boards favour. I am able to aid students in the development of their writing style and approaches to academic essays, given my years of teaching, tutoring and examiner experience. I have given seminars on academic writing and essay writing, and set creative writing essay questions for students to practice on, as well as subject specific essay questions. These skills are transferable to other subjects, where the ability to write well is required.

Preparation for entrance examinations:
At both the college I teach at, and privately, I have tutored and prepared students for Oxbridge entrance examinations. This includes dedicated tutorials as well as the setting and marking of a range of past entrance exam papers, as well as those devised by myself and colleagues. The papers are not designed to test knowledge but instead test a students skills, with a focus on criticality and analytical thinking.
The University of Oxford requires students who wish to apply to study History as a degree course, to sit the HAT (History Aptitude Test). For those who wish to study Geography, Human Sciences, PPE or Psychology, they need to sit the TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment).
The University of Cambridge differs to Oxford in that the tests are set at-interview. For History, students sit the HAA (History Admissions Assessment). For prospective Geography students, this differs by college: some ask for examples of your work; others require students to sit at-interview assessments. I can advise parents and students on this.

UCAS Tutoring:
I offer a tailored and highly effective programme of assistance to both choose university courses and write a personal statement that affords the highest probability of success. My 5 years of experience as a UCAS Councillor and Referee, my taking part in UCAS events, having applied to and studied at two universities, and successful funding applications, have enabled me to develop a deep and wide ranging knowledge of this process. Crucially, it has enabled me to advise on how each individual should access this most testing of areas.

Details of the hourly rate for both Entrance Examinations and UCAS Tutoring can be found under `Entrance Examinations`.

We have found Robert to be a really helpful and encouraging tutor, working with many aspects of the A-level course. Really useful to have advice on essay and exam technique as well as assistance with content and background. Robert was also very accommodating about managing tutoring around other commitments.

Rob tutored me in both politics and history during my second year of A-levels, and as a result I saw a rise in my grades. Rob was particularly good at the exam technique that comes with essay based subjects, something vital when it comes to exams. This, in its self can considerably and fundamentally improve the overall appearance of an essay. What I found most significant, was the improvement of my personal writing style, his contribution to helping me to develop my own writing style in a way that I could understand best, based on my previous work that we went through together. This helped me throughout the year to perfect the structuring of an essay, which is just as important as understanding the content, and was definitely something that I saw an improvement in when comparing my first year work to my second year work. In regards to teaching the content, I had no doubt in his knowledge of the course and he explained the information with a different outlook in comparison to my teachers, which helped me understand and consolidate my knowledge better. Rob was always very easy to get along with and helped hugely with my confidence in my ability. He created a comfortable environment whereby I had no issues with asking any questions, however silly they may have seemed. Lastly, for a student now going on to a history degree, he gave me a valuable insight into what a degree in history would entail, and I feel better prepared for the jump between A-level and University.
