Information about Sarah

Hi there, I`m Sarah, a Cardiovascular Research Scientist specialising in molecular and cellular biology. I completed my PhD in 2012 specialising in the impact of genetic diversity on pathogenic immune receptors. To date, I have over 10 research manuscri pts published in the field of Human Biology. My practical experience of working in laboratories, designing and carrying out experiments, analysing data and writing scientific manuscri pts means that I do not only have an excellent theoretical understanding of biological sciences but also a practical one, which has proven to be invaluable in bringing the textbook to life! I am a friendly, approachable individual who tutors because I love to work with students that are keen to learn. I also really enjoy seeing students` confidence grow as their understanding and interpretation of topics improve. My goal with all students is to ensure they understand each subject area, know how to answer the array of examination questions and obtain the grades they know they are capable of achieving. I have had many mentors over the years and it is nice to impart knowledge on to the next generation - and if any students end up considering a career in a scientific related field - then even better!

Experience: I am an experienced GCSE and A Level Biology Tutor covering EdExcel, AQA and OCR examination boards. In addition to having extensive experience in tutoring one-to-one, small groups teaching and training students in both laboratory skills and experimental analysis at undergraduate degree and masters level, I have also delivered many lectures and talks to students at the University of Bristol, Nottingham and Sheffield.

My priority is to provide children and young adults a supportive and caring environment, so that they can build the confidence and enthusiasm to learn and develop independently. My objective is to teach relevant material in such a manner that my students have a true understanding of the subject; I do not believe in merely memorising information - comprehension is key. This approach is most important in preparing students for exams. I achieve this by explaining complex ideas and concepts clearly and in an engaging, light-hearted and relatable fashion. The approach to lessons vary depending on the topic of the day and the current level of understanding by the students. I may talk through complex processes, explaining the details of each step of a topic and ensuring the student fully understands . By the end of the lesson the student will be able to explain the topic back to myself. In this situation I then provide homework which will test their knowledge and also serves as study notes during revision for exams. I also focus heavily on examination questions for all subjects covered - when a student has a good basic understanding of a subject I will expand their knowledge so they can actually interpret and answer exam questions which follow model answers. This approach maximises a students opportunity for success. I work in a way in that I build upon subject areas so that the individual subject areas link together to expand their understanding of how biological processes are linked.
