Information about Luke

Hi! My name`s Luke and I`m a newly qualified doctor, having studied medicine at Imperial College London. I started university with four A*s at A level (mathematics, further mathematics, chemistry and biology). As I am studying medicine, I have been DBS assessed and also sat both the UKCAT (now called the UCAT) and BMAT. On the back of these admissions tests, I received invitations to interview from all four medical schools to which I applied, and was offered a place from three of these. At university, I was awarded a distinction for both my first and second year results, and finished within the top 10% in my third year exams. In my fourth year, I intercalated and achieved a first-class degree in Anaesthesia and Critical Care. I finished top of my BSc programme to win the Pereira Prize, and my research project won the Hepburn Memorial Prize and has been presented at the American Heart Association. This research has now been published in the International Journal of Cardiology, for which I am the first author. In my fifth year, I finished in the top 10% across all exams, and won the Abrahams, HWC Vines and Calvely prizes for my performance across these exams. I am hence very comfortable teaching maths, biology and medicine, and preparing students for the medical admission process. I was nominated to represent my university in the prestigious Gold Medal competition, where I won the Betuel prize.

I firmly believe that the key to success in the study of sciences is to develop an understanding of concepts, rather than simply rote learning a list of facts (although unfortunately, there`s no escaping learning respiration and photosynthesis!). If you have any questions about what we`re learning, be they on the syllabus or not, feel free to ask. I can`t promise that I`ll know the answer, but I will quite happily go away and do some research so I can provide clarity.

As far as structure is concerned, I personally feel it should be very much tailored to the student in question. Different people learn in different ways, and so I would always be quick to find out how the student would prefer lessons to be structured. If this tutoring were alongside school studies of the subject, this could either be based around reinforcing any concepts which were found difficult or as a revision of everything taught. Ideally, I would ask that you let me know a couple days prior to our lesson what topic you have been learning and which bits in particular you would like to go over, so that I can tailor any material precisely to your needs. There`s no point in wasting your time going over the bits you already know inside-out!

Having had this requested by a couple of people now, I am also offering pre-medical school tutoring this summer. This would be aimed at those starting to study medicine in the autumn, who want to shore up their base over the next couple months. This will start by going over the parts of A level biology/chemistry which are relevant to medicine, and then build on these fundamentals to discuss topics which will be introduced at medical school. Likewise, I have also received enquiries about tutoring medicine, so I am now starting this too. I’m very comfortable tutoring both the preclinical theory, and the more practical approach to clinical medicine. Throughout my time at medical school I have taken on medical students for tuition, and so would be very able to continue this with personal students.

Availability: I am available most evenings, and will also be able to find time during the day on occasions too! Monday-Sunday, just get in touch and let me know what works best for you and we can arrange something.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: Previously, I helped set up and taught within a scheme to help 11-year-old students who had just entered secondary school to bring their reading, writing and mathematics up to the expected standard at that age, providing valuable experience of one-to-one tutoring and also explaining a subject matter at a level which is suitable to the student.

Currently, I have just finished tutoring four children across a range of subjects (chemistry, biology, maths and medicine admissions tests) and levels (GCSEs, A levels and admissions tests), and have been working with them for up to six months. I also tutored students for the BMAT and UKCAT in the last application cycle, and a number of adult learners who had mathematics and statistics aptitude tests for civil service jobs they were applying for.

As part of the medical school, I have delivered several lectures both to my peers and younger year groups - this has been through various medical education societies, and also as part of the official teaching schedule of the university. I would be more than happy to ask previous students to get in touch with you so you can ask them about my tuition directly, if you had any questions for them.

I hope you choose me to help you progress with your studies, and together we`ll work towards achieving the very best grades!

Amazing Tutor! Luke who worked with my daughter as an A level tutor for just under two years did a wonderful job tutoring her in all three of her A level subjects, maths, chemistry and biology. Luke helped guide my daughter to the correct answers through knowledgeable explanations of the topic and prompt questions. Luke is extremely friendly, very experienced and professional. He was invaluable at guiding my daughter through the medical application process as well as helping her prepare for her medical school entrance exams and interviews. I would highly recommend Luke for any of the subjects listed above even if your child is not interested in a medical career!

Luke is a very good and helpful tutor who intensively prepared my sister for her BMAT. His techniques were excellent and made her feel comfortable and prepared in a very short time. She has since secured an interview based on these results.

Luke has been tutoring our daughter preparing for the BAMT since a month. She is going to take it on the 31th of October. According to her, his advice for each part of the exam are accurate, completely updated, especially because he took and passed the test only two years ago. His explanations are very clear and structured. Our daughter is very satisfied with the lessons he is delivering.
