Information about Stephen
I am 45 year old, happily married, proud father of two young children. I have a PGCE and a Masters as well as a Bachelors Degree in English and have taught English and Film in sixth forms for twenty years. I have experience of teaching English from basic skills to A Level but would happily teach undergraduates and help with post-graduate research. Indeed, my pupils have aged from seven to those in their seventies. I specialise in GCSE and A Level English Language & Literature teaching and have fifteen years of examining experience with AQA and WJEC boards, including seven years of leading exam teams and teaching them how to examine. It is, therefore, fair to say that I have a good grasp of what examiners are looking for and can ensure exam success. I also have management experience (fifteen years) and have led AS/A Level teachers/courses in English Language and English Language & Literature. I have 10 years of pastoral experience as a personal tutor too. As well as teaching, I help to manage several A Level and BTEC departments of a local college where I am a senior leader.
Finally, my coaching experience, helping other teachers to improve their practice, started when I qualified as a mentor at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2015. Please note I have a CRB check from 2012.
Availability: Weekday Evenings
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have taught on the following courses : English Language AS/A2, English Literature AS/A2, English Language & Literature AS/A2, International Baccalaureate English, Access English, A Level General Studies, GCSE English, Key and Basic Skills English, AS/A2 Film Studies and Drumming and Creative Writing Enrichment.
I love my job so whatever level I teach, I always get a buzz from seeing a student progress, be it with their spelling, grammar or Shakespeare. I am patient, enthusiastic, passionate and very knowledgeable about my subjects and I feel I excel at one to one tuition. I believe in a student led approach as every student is different and I build sessions around what you require in a collaborative fashion. I am happy to help with coursework, dissertations or deliver more exam focused sessions. No matter what your aspirations are in English, I will give you the confidence to achieve them at your own pace.
Feedback For Stephen (7)
Fab are the words to use. Stephen is a lovely fella, very engaging, fun, light hearted but also very focused and certainly knows his `stuff`. Feedback from our son is that Stephen is great in breaking down what he needs to learn and makes it all very clear cutting out all the confusing bits....he now enjoys and looks forward to his English Lessons :-)
Very pleasant, knowledgeable and professional.
Steve has been tutoring our 16 year son for GCSE English as he briefly attended school abroad so needed an overview of the GCSE curriculum. Steve is passionate about teaching English and is a very enthusiastic tutor. He is very friendly and keeps the lessons interesting for our son. We would have no hesitation in recommending Steve.
Steve has been working with our son for a few weeks now and we are delighted not only with the progress our son is making but more importantly with how well he interacts with Steve. Our son has struggled to engage with adults for years but Steve has managed to get him to engage with him on a level that we have not seen before. Our son finds the sessions with Steve engaging, interesting and extremely helpful.
