Information about Julie

I am a teacher with 25 years experience across both primary and secondary schools. I believe that many of the children who are not reaching their potential in school, regardless of ability, are lacking in confidence. A personal programme tailored to their specific needs can do wonders for a child`s self belief and help them to reach their full potential. I have experience tailoring learning to meet a range of individual needs from high achievers to those who struggle.

By observing the way children write and calculate, I can identify potential issues immediately and address these before they become embedded. I create personal programmes by listening to concerns, observing children`s work and tailoring classes to address their specific needs. This allows them to immediately experience the feeling of success that many are missing. By pacing the learning to the needs of the learner, I am able to ensure that this is a feeling they become accustomed to. Success at any level can do wonders for a child`s self belief and help them to reach their full potential.

All children learn in different ways and the key to being a successful tutor is finding the best approach for each student. Some need pace and frequent changes in activity, others need slower explanations and time to process. Some learn better with visual aids, others need to act things out or use practical examples. I will get to know your child and adapt my teaching to suit their particular needs. This could be consolidating and supplementing what is happening in school to ensure understanding; working independently of the school curriculum to fill in gaps; a combination of both of the above.

This is the advantage of private tuition, the content and method can be finely tuned to every student`s needs and learning style. This boosts their confidence and turns them into successful learners better equipped to reach their potential.

Experience: After teaching KS1 and KS2 for 20 years, I moved to High School teaching where I have taught both English and Maths to GCSE.

English
I am an experienced teacher of phonics and have successfully adapted the KS1 programme to work with KS2 and even KS3 students who are experiencing difficulties with reading and spelling. At the other end of the learning spectrum, I am very familiar with the texts studied for GCSE literature and the structure of the language papers and can help students refine their techniques to help them gain maximum marks.

Maths
I have also covered the entire spectrum of maths: from making sure that basic concepts are solid in Y1 through developing reasoning skills to the difficult concepts on the Higher GCSE papers. This range of experience means that I am very good at finding and filling in gaps in understanding, building confidence and encouraging children to exceed their expectations.

I have a great deal of experience working with children with special needs including, but not limited to: dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and autism. I have a great deal of experience with children for whom English is not their first language and have worked extensively with lower ability children.

I worked overseas (Colombia, El Salvador and Romania) for 7 years. This means that, as well as being experienced in the different learning needs of children trying to access a curriculum in an additional language, I have first hand of experience of the difficulties involved in trying to learn and communicate in a new language.
