Information about George

I`m an enthusiastic, supportive tutor. I believe that if you don`t understand something, it simply hasn`t been explained to you in the right way.

I have a student-centred approach and I believe that each student requires a unique approach to help them reach their goals.
I see maths as building blocks, if a concept hasn`t quite been understood, you`re left with a gap which causes problems later on. By finding and filling in this gap, the rest of the blocks fall into place. When this happens, it is an absolute joy to see how confidence soars and how quickly students are able to pick up new ideas and concepts.

I cover all topics across KS2, KS3, KS4 (GCSE) and A-levels, including exam preparation and revision. I am also very happy to work with adult learners who may feel held back by their maths, or parents wanting to gain a better understanding. If there`s anything maths-based that I can help you with, don`t hesitate to get in touch - we can solve it together!

Availability: I can be flexible with my availability. Please contact me if you have specific requirements.

If you live outside my normal area, feel free to contact me anyway. I may require an additional charge towards my time and travel cost, but I try to accommodate all students if I can.

COVID-19 UPDATE: I am now only tutoring via webcam using an interactive whiteboard. This works very well at engaging the student and allowing us to work together. A webcam is preferable, but all that is needed on your end is a computer, a microphone, and speakers/headphones. I`m also happy to offer ad-hoc lessons to support students studying at home.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: I have a Masters degree in Maths from the University of St. Andrews, and I spent 2 years doing a PhD in Maths at Exeter University before deciding it wasn`t for me. While at Exeter University I gained the LTHE I & II qualifications (Learning & Teaching in Higher Education), which focus on different learning styles and teaching methods.

I started tutoring as a stop-gap when I stopped doing my PhD but found I loved it, and students responded really well. I have now been a professional tutor for years and still enjoy every session. I am also training part-time to become a counsellor. This has been invaluable as it has strenghthened my ability to identify the stress triggers for different students, and to help get over any mental blocks or maths phobias.

An immediate thumbs up for George from my daughter, who looks forward to her tutorials. We are a month in now and George is always amiable, communicative and most importantly my daughter is feeling far more optimistic about working towards her GCSE
