Information about Paul

Hello! My name is Paul, I have over 2 years of tutoring experience and I have completed a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Windsor (Canada), MSc in Mining Geology at the University of Exeter and a BSc Honours degree in Geology at Kingston University in the last 4 years. I am a very passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual whom has enjoyed the fieldwork (SW England, NW Scotland, SW Wales, Australia, Norway, Cyprus, Spain, Canada), lecture and research aspects of my degrees. I would like to have a career in academia and become a university professor.

I believe that I have the skills, background, patience and enthusiasm to not only become a great lecturer but to also be a great science tutor. My enthusiasm for science in contagious and I am patient and knowledgeable enough to be able to convey the subject matter in a comprehensible way. I therefore believe that I am highly suited to private tuition and providing tailored tuition lessons to each individual.

Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are all used by Geologists to find out the why`s, what`s, how`s, when`s, which`s and who`s of our planet and the universe. Science and Maths can be applied to real world problems and this is what got me so interested in Geology, the other Science and Maths in the first place and I sincerely hope that I can kindle a spark or flame of interest in the topics. The topics to be learned can be tailored to the needs of the tutees based on how relevant they believe each topic is. I believe that once I have sparked an interest in Science or Maths, enthusiasm and good grades will soon proceed. Most people often think that studying is a laborious, never ending chore, however, I believe that learning should be fun and it is fun if the subject is taught in the right way. The same goes with revision and exam preparation. It is all about ensuring that exams and revision are not thought of as gruelling exercises and as opportunities to demonstrate how much you know instead.

I have been taught doctoral level Geology and A level Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths so I am fully aware of the syllabuses for these subjects. My approach would be to meet up with the tutee for the first lesson to assess how advanced they are in the subjects that they need tutoring in and what strengths and weaknesses they have. Assessment of the tutees goals will enable me to draw up a teaching plan that is tailored to the tutees level and the goals that they would like to achieve. This will allow the tutee to realise their potential and lead to increased confidence as we work our way through the subject syllabus. Past exam papers will be introduced at the earliest opportunity possible in order to allow ample time to hone their exam and revision techniques.

I am also able to teach Geography, History, IT, French, Graphics and English up to at least GCSE level. My understanding of a wide range of subjects and my ability to link these subjects will enable me to tutor more effectively.

Availability: I can work on weekdays and weekends and during the day or in the evening. I am able to be very flexible with working hours.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have informally tutored both friends and family for as long as I can remember in addition to having been a mentor to Year 7 and 8 students during my A levels. I have become very good at explaining complex processes and concepts in simple terms to people of all ages because of my excellent communication and interpersonal skills. I have even informally taught English as a second language and gained great satisfaction from doing so.

I asked my teenage son what he thought of Paul and he summed him up like this: “Awesome!”
So I think that says it all about Paul!
We have booked Paul for many revision lessons this year for GCSE biology, physics and chemistry and my son found his enthusiasm for science so wonderful that he wanted him to stay for longer and longer tuition sessions.
Paul is very kind and likeable, puts over his science well, and he kept my son so interested in his exam topics that my son was willing to do some revision on his own. The result is that my son is sitting his GCSEs with greater confidence of gaining better grades.
Paul is an interesting young man, punctual and polite, and I would sincerely recommend him to any family looking for a good tutor.
