Information about Sophie
Hi,
I studied Maths and Physics up to A-level and have a Masters and PhD in Physics. I am an experienced medical physicist who worked in the NHS for 13 years. After having my three children (now aged 7,9 and 11) I am now tutoring students in KS1/2 Maths, Science and English, KS3 Maths and Science, GCSE Physics and Maths and A-level Physics and Maths.
I love working with children and young people and can find the right method to work with different students learning styles. I have a thorough understanding of the curriculum so can find different ways of explaining things to students having trouble understanding certain topics.
Availability: I currently have a few spaces available to tutor during weekdays 9.30-2.30 At my home in Kings Langley. I have some spaces on Tuesday evenings 5-9pm and Saturday mornings 10.30 -12 noon in your home or mine.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have taught at undergraduate level for many years and have now successfully tutored students through Maths and Physics/Science GCSE (for example, I helped Nick to improve from 3 to 5s in Maths and Science, and Josie to secure 8s required for A-level study). I can teach all exams boards and tailor tutoring to the required outcome of public exams.
I have home educated my youngest son through Reception and Year 1 so have a sound knowledge of KS1 Maths and Phonics. I have a thorough knowledge of the national curriculum and have tutored Year 6 students to help them catch up after home learning and offer ongoing support to students with maths phobia or learning difficulties such as dyscalculia.
I am happy to tutor in your home, my home or via zoom. I can tailor my tutoring to all ages and incorporate new topics, consolidation games and practice, and set and mark homework and revision for the student. A mix of methods over the course of the tutorial will keep the student engaged and learning.
I am also a strong advocate for pre-teaching of topics to students who find maths hard. This concept means to teach a topic to a child BEFORE they learn it in school rather than after or alongside school teaching. This has the advantage of giving children a huge confidence boost as they understand what is being taught alongside their peers and can stop them feeling over-whelmed and left behind. This change in outlook strongly influences children`s ability to understand new topics and access school lessons successfully.
