Information about Oscar

I`m a former United Nations scientist and youth development worker who has tutored numerous students in Maths, Science and English in both the UK and developing countries.

I am a supportive, knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutor who believes in encouraging the personal development of students throughout their teenage years. As such I endeavour to build self-confidence and growth in my pupils, whilst imparting my own love of nature and learning.

I offer structured, 1:1 lessons in Biology and Maths, with regular assessment and a flexible time-schedule. However I make sure to adapt my methods to the individual student’s needs, beginning with assessing their knowledge of the subject and identifying areas for improvement. I then work through these areas, delivering structured sessions focussing on exam technique, past papers and exam-style questions.

My own background is in applied biology; I first studied Zoology at the University of Exeter, then moved to London where I achieved a Distinction in a Masters in Applied Ecology at Imperial College London. I then got a job with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, and left to train rural people in developing countries like Vietnam, Gabon and Indonesia to adapt to climate change. Currently, I am working on a documentary on the beleaguered banana industry of the Caribbean.

I offer well-priced, structured, 1:1 lessons with regular assessment and a flexible time-schedule. I do hope you’ll reach out so that we can help students on the path to success.

Availability: Weekends and weekdays, except Wednesday.

Experience: I used to work for the charity Raleigh International in Nepal. With them, I tutored young children (8-14) in learning Maths, English as a foreign language, and Biological sciences. I also tutored older children (14+) in personal development, business skills and how to identify their own career ambitions.

At home in the UK I have tutored family members and friends` children on a private basis in A-level Biology and GCSE Maths for two years. Predominantly, these have consisted of 1:1 sessions during university holidays, but also occasionally online tuition via Skype.

I have also worked for the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park in London, touring school groups around the park and leading interactive activities for the children to engage with nature and the environment (such as pond dipping, bird spotting, crafting activities and picking wild fruits in the wild-foods garden).
