Information about Shumyia

I have always had an interest and aptitude in Maths and the Sciences so decided to pursue them at A-level and through my degree. With many of my classmates struggling, I often explained concepts and helped to aid the understanding of others, discovering that I enjoyed doing so in the process.
Studying such a heavy degree has taught me how to be light-hearted, respond well to stress, and effectively time manage.

Availability: Weekday afternoons and Sunday Afternoon/Evening

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: At the age of 15, I volunteered as a teaching assistant where I learnt the components of constructing a lesson. I have also worked in 3 different customer service environments which imporved my interpersonal and communication skills, skills that are essential to provide quality tuition. I began tutoring in July 2020, during my 2nd of medical school, and now I am currently a 4th year medical student.

When teaching, I focus on explaining concepts in simple words without jargon. This is to ensure understanding because, without a good foundation of understanding, it can be difficult to problem solve and think laterally when answering tricky exam questions. Memorisation is always the 2nd priority, after understanding.

During my previous years in medical school I have tried and tested different study approaches to determine the most effective ones. Through research and personal experience, I have come to discover that spaced repetition and active recall are the best methods for long term retention. To aid memorisation (following understanding) I teach my personal study skills and methods to students to facilitate their journey as independent learners.
