Information about Jevgeni
Im offering tuition in the following four areas:
1. Philosophy. Im offering lessons of (Western) academic philosophy (excluding modern Continental philosophical tradition) and (the philosophical aspect of) religious studies. I can prepare students for GCSE or A Level examinations, or assist them in their college- or university-level studies, as well as prepare them to start university-level education in philosophy, political theory or religious studies. I would also happily tutor those interested in general self-improvement and just curious about the subject.
I have a doctoral degree in this field my PhD thesis was on supererogation and moral demandingness. My primary research interests are: ethics, meta-ethics, moral neuropsychology, political philosophy, philosophy of rationality, aesthetics.
2. Russian Language. Apart from general language skills on these lessons we can focus on survival Russian, Russian for business, academic Russian, etc. I can also prepare students for GCSE and A Level examinations. I am a native speaker of the language and have plenty of experience of teaching it.
3. English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Again, these lessons can be general or focus on survival, business, or academic language. The language of instruction can be either English, in which case you need to know enough English to understand the instructions, or Russian, in which case we can start with any level of English language fluency.
4. Basic Skills, Critical Reasoning and Essay-Writing Skills. These lessons would help you improve your literacy and general critical reasoning skills, e.g. teaching you to construct arguments, notice hidden implications and logical fallacies, make inferences and deductions, etc. I can also teach you to better structure and write essays and other academic texts.
NB! I will NOT write your essays for you however, I would be happy to review your work and advise you on how to improve it.
Usually, I do not take students younger than 14 years although, I might make an exception for particularly bright 12-13 year-olds. This is largely because I use a mixture of pedagogical and andragogical methods, which require greater student discipline.
Im offering both face-to-face and online lessons (usually via Skype). For face-to-face lessons I will travel to the students location.
As well as one-to-one lessons, Im also offering group lessons for groups of up to 6 students, which can be a good way for the students to both save money and get some discussion/conversation partners. For group sessions we can use one of the public libraries.
Please note, the prices indicated above are for 45 minutes of one-to-one tuition. Here is a more detailed breakdown of the fees:
Standard Fees (excluding EFL) for One-to-One Lessons:
£20 for 45min, £25 for 60min, £35 for 90min.
Standard Fees for EFL One-to-One Lessons:
£15 for 45min, £20 for 60min, £30 for 90min.
Standard Fees for Group Lessons:
£25 for 45min, £30 for 60min, £40 for 90min.
The price is for the entire group. For example, it would be £6 per person for a 60min lesson in a group of 5 people.
If you would like to take group lessons but cannot find anyone to do it with you, please let me know and I will put you on the list. Once there are enough people on the list, well schedule a class.
I might charge more depending on the students location. When enquiring please let me know your post code. My time, including preparation, travel time and travel expenses should cost at least £10 an hour.
For philosophy and essay-writing lessons I might charge extra for marking essays longer than 2000 words.
Availability: At the moment I have very flexible schedule and am available during most times during the week, including evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: During my PhD studies I worked as a tutor at the University of St. Andrews, tutoring and occasionally lecturing on the following subjects: ethics, meta-ethics, ancient philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of rationality, philosophy of action and aesthetic. I have also worked for the Student Support Services, providing advice and learning support to the universitys students.
From 2005 until the present time to supplement my income I have also worked as a private tutor, teaching English (as a foreign language), Russian, philosophy, critical reasoning and essay-writing skills to a wide variety of students both on one-to-one basis and in small groups. In the past 4-5 years I have taken a particularly large number of both English and Russian business language students, and acquired particular expertise in this area.
Lastly, between 2008 and 2012 I did some work as a Russian language interpreter and translator, offering consecutive and occasionally simultaneous interpretation services.
