Information about Nicholas

I am currently Head of History at a selective school in Oxford. I am a registered examiner for A-Level and IGCSE exam boards (AQA, Edexcel IGCSE and OCR A-Level - I mark the formal summer exam papers). I have been teaching for over 12 years, 8 years in the state maintained sector and almost 5 years in the independent sector, first at King`s College School Wimbledon and, now, at Abingdon School, Oxford.

I am from Oxford. I was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and I come from a strong academic family - both my parents lectured at the University of Oxford. I am a History graduate with a BA (Hons) from King`s College London where I achieved an Upper Second (2:1). I completed my PGCE at the Institute of Education and was awarded a distinction. I also have an MA Ed (History) which I completed at UCL part-time whilst working full time as a Head of History.

At undergraduate level I specialised in British colonial history and the making of the colonial regime in India. Whilst many of the modules I studied focused on modern History, I also completed two Medieval units on British and European history c. 400-1200AD. I studied under some eminent Modernists and Medievalists such as Dr David Carpenter, Dr Janet Nelson and Dr Richard Vinen. At MA level I specialised in international perspectives in history education, leadership in history education and the political battles over the history curricula in Britain.

Availability: One weekday evening per week (upon arrangement); Saturday day time or evening (except Hilary term, January to March when I take sports fixtures in the daytime); Sundays. Generally I am flexible and I hope to be able to accommodate a child`s needs.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have considerable experience of a number of specifications and examination boards, whilst I also have experience of teaching in both the state sector and the independent sector both as a student and as a teacher. As such I am able to work with students from a broad range of abilities from the ages of 11-18. I have now been teaching for 9 years.

I have been a head of Department for three years and achieved the best results ever achieved for the school (first at Barking Abbey School and more recently at Ricards Lodge High School). I have worked as a UCAS adviser and teacher of History at King`s College School Wimbledon. I am currently head of history at a leading selective school in Oxfordshire.

In all the schools aforementioned, I have taught years 7-9, GCSE groups following the Edexcel, OCR and AQA examination boards. I currently teach IGCSE as well. Topics and content taught include: Medicine and Public Health Through Time; Britain 1945-1975 - Youth, Women, Immigration; The Civil Rights Movement in the USA c. 1945-c.1975; Germany - from democracy to dictatorship 1919-1945; the classic topic of Hitler`s rise to power; USA 1919-41 - Boom, Bust and Recovery (including the New Deal); The Cold War 1945-75; The Transformation of Surgery c.1845-1919; The Vietnam War; Events in the Gulf - 1970-c.2004; World War One & the Versailles Settlements; The League of Nations; The inter-war years 1919-39; The collapse of communism and rebellions in the Soviet Bloc up to 1991.

At sixth form, I have considerable experience - both as a teacher and Head of Department - of preparing students for public and internal examinations. I am also a registered examiner with AQA and as such I can provide valuable insights into the exam system - something that is particularly useful at a time of curriculum and specification changes since 2015I have taught Edexcel, OCR and AQA modern History at A-Level and I also currently teach the International Baccalaureate (Higher Level, although tutoring standard level would not be problematic at all). I have taught a broad range of courses at sixth form and as such I am happy to tutor any student of modern and early modern history of sixth form age.

5/5 Rating

Nick has been an absolutely inspirational and extremely solid tutor for our son who is right now doing his A level after a very disrupted year (caused by the Covid school closure and our son being ill). The lessons have been thoughtful and thorough and it has really helped our son regain confidence and focus. Very highly recommended.
