Information about Sam
No two students are the same, so no two lessons should be, either. This is one half of my teaching approach, the other being a strong foundation of subject knowledge from my studies and experience.
I have found tutoring to be an immensely fulfilling experience, in that it creates time and space to delve deeper into learning, and I have valued the personal relationships of trust and reciprocity developed with my students. I always look forward to meeting new students and finding new challenges to overcome together.

Experience: I qualified as a secondary English teacher through Teach First and went on to achieve a Master`s in Educational Leadership. This allowed me to research the particular challenges that students encounter on entering sixth form, and ways in which GCSE exams do and do not prepare them for success. During my time working in schools I was consistently rated either `Good` or `Outstanding` in lesson observations. I also led after-school enrichment sessions to enhance students` debating and critical thinking skills.
My career as a teacher and tutor has given me experience of working with students of all abilities and different backgrounds, including students with EAL and a range of SEN. I helped raise attainment in two lower-ability English classes during my first two years and later went on to lead classes for Oxbridge applicants. I am skilled in differentiating my teaching to enable any students to take their next step.
I headed up a new Economics department in my third and fourth years, which gave me an in-depth understanding of different exam boards and syllabuses. I have been an examiner for three different A level Economics exam boards (OCR, Edexcel and AQA) for four years running, and have received positive feedback on the accuracy of my marking. This has given me a thorough understanding of the critical success factors enabling students to achieve, particularly at the top-end of the mark scheme.
Since leaving teaching, I have spent five years tutoring through several agencies. I have tutored students ranging from Year 6 through to 12, including via Skype, in students` homes and in public libraries. As I said, no two lessons are the same!
Last year, I completed an MA in Creative Writing to deepen my understanding of genre and technique.
