Information about Kitty

I am an engaging tutor with a successful academic background. In all my activities, I believe in a strong work ethic, which includes a great desire to help others to reach their full academic, practical and personal potential.

In 2013, I graduated from Cambridge University with a First-Class degree in Theology and Religious Studies. During the three-year course, I developed a significant and deep understanding of the history, history of art, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and philosophy of religions. I also acquired an advanced understanding of essay and exam techniques and refined my writing skills in 4 ‘dissertations’ which received high marks in the final exams.

I also have a Master’s in Science in Psychology, which I completed in 2015 at Essex University, receiving a high Distinction. During this one-year intensive course, I acquired an in-depth knowledge across key psychology subjects, as well as data gathering and analysis, and conducting experiments and writing up results.

Since graduating, I have been teaching yoga, Mindfulness and English as a foreign language in various countries around the world. I also spent a year working in France in order to gain fluency in French. Now based in Scotland, where I teach in an English language school, I am keen to devote my spare time to tutoring. As well as Psychology, Religious Studies and French at A-level and below, I tutor English at GCSE level and below. Having direct experience of the English exam system (gaining straight A*s in my A-levels), I know I will be a very effective tutor to young students who need support as they move closer to university-level.

Bringing a positive attitude to each hour I spend with tutees is remarkably satisfying, and getting to know them, alongside ensuring that they learn and absorb the essentials of the subject, can help uncover hidden possibilities and nurture self-belief. I am always willing to go the extra mile to enable them to fulfil potential and reach the highest marks in their exams. I also know a thing or two about the stress exams can create, and can offer students techniques to help cope with this if needed.

I am passionate about treating each of my students – whatever their age or educational background – on their own terms, appreciating their individual approach to learning rather than applying a generic or universal approach to which they must conform. Without this, it becomes much harder to identify tutee’s difficulties not to mention understanding his/her unique strengths.

Availability: I am available during weekday evenings, UK time, from 5.00 - 7.30pm, and at agreed times on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons/early evenings.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: Since a young age, I have enjoyed looking after and teaching children and teenagers. I have tutored a range of subjects since my first year at university, notably GCSE and A-level students in English, French, and Religious Studies. As well as honing in on specific areas and topics of concern, I work with students on general skills such as essay writing, exam technique, and study and revision methods. Working with students for an hour, one-to-one, allows us to identify and address their needs at a pace aligned with their progress, and many of my students have gone on to gain A and A* grades in these subjects.

I am also a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language, and have experience teaching children and adults in the UK and abroad. While living in for year in Paris, I worked as a private English tutor to French children and adults as well as a teaching assistant in a Parisian pre-school. I have also taught large classes as well as one-on-one in high schools and language schools in Italy and Scotland, and have experience preparing students for IELTS and Cambridge English exams.

I teach both written and spoken English, concentrating on essential grammar, sentence construction and oral comprehension through songs, texts and conversation, as well as creative grammar exercises that I create or source carefully and specifically (around the interests of the student) as homework.

Over the last 5 years, I have also developed as a teacher of Mindfulness. Practicing Mindfulness techniques has been fundamental to my own academic and professional performance, and research continues to discover the benefits these can have on awareness, concentration, memory, performance, anxiety and mood (to name a few). I have enjoyed providing talks and training sessions on Mindfulness to companies in London and Melbourne, and can teach students the same techniques alongside our main focus.
