Information about Hannah
I am an experienced and reflective English teacher who is dedicated to promoting independent thought and expression, and resilience among my students. Able to think creatively, logically and holistically, I plan interesting and carefully sequenced schemes of learning and produce high-quality exemplars of a range of text types.
My effectiveness as an English teacher is partly owing to my comprehensive subject knowledge. During my English Literature degree, I took modules which span a range of genres, cultures, historical contexts and theoretical perspectives and my particular strengths were the close analysis of texts, my knowledge of Renaissance and Gothic literature, and essay writing. I have subsequently increased my knowledge of English Language through working for Garnet Education (an English Language Teaching [ELT] publishers), reading a range of materials on linguistics, and attending a creative writing group. I feel that having the requisite breadth and depth of knowledge to nurture thorough analysis of texts and to provide high-quality exemplars of concept maps and essays is important in English teaching, particularly in light of the new and more demanding GCSE specifications.
Additionally, there is a strong theoretical basis to all my planning. During my PGCE and NQT year I researched a wide range of teaching methods and undertook Masters-level assignments on co-construction and teaching creative writing. I have since attended a Philosophy for Children (P4C), Level 1 course and participated in a Lets Think in English (a cognitive acceleration programme) pilot study. Consequently, higher-order questions underpin much of my planning and this has been recognised as a strength by line-managers.
As a tutor, I will be committed to understanding your childs specific challenges in English, and will personalise activities to best suit their needs.
