Information about Emma

I am a Psychology student at Durham University. I thoroughly enjoy interacting with other students, to help provide a deeper and more compelling understanding in subjects. I am patient and believe in building confidence, to flourish students` motivation.

I have been awarded a Vice-Chancellor Scholarship in Arts, which has given me a basis to develop my creativity. I feel this has been fundamental in advancing my teaching skills, as I have been able to use new creative ideas to tutor students in more interesting ways.

I will always make each session adapt to the students needs, by asking how they best learn.

Experience: I have a wide variety of tutoring experience: tutoring ages as young as 8 to 18 years old. This includes teaching Psychology, History, English and Maths.

I feel strongly about giving back to the community, thus have an extensive amount of volunteer work. I was dedicated to providing help weekly at Woodlands School, in Leatherhead. This was a specialised curriculum school for children with severe learning difficulties, very complex needs or autism. This taught me how to find the right way to cater for each individual Childs needs, to support them to achieve their best abilities. I also volunteered to help with the set design and costumes for a production of ‘Playing by the Rules’ by Year 4 at Shincliffe Primary School, Durham. My brief was to create 30 different costumes, so that each child was dressed as a board game, and to paint the backdrop in the Assembly Rooms, all of which I did by myself. I also took the opportunity at the last minute to volunteer at Hild Bede Primary School, Durham, helping them write dialogue, poems and scri pts and then present them to an audience. I have also worked as a peer mentor at City of London Freemen`s School, where I would spend some break times consoling pupils about any problems that were causing them distress. As an academic and drama scholar at St John`s School, I was often asked to tutor other pupils with their academic work.

I have also spent most summers babysitting for children, which has shown me my passion for working with children. I have seen how different each child`s personality is, and how important it is to help each of these personalities differently to fulfil their best potential.

I am able to provide a DBS check and references, when asked for.
