Information about Glyn
I offer private tuition outside my normal teaching hours, including most weekends. Over the years, I have successfully supported many dozens of students in achieving their potential in GCSE and A Level English, Media and Film, as well as helping younger students at Key Stage 3.
I have previously or currently tutored students from a range of local schools, including Charters, Collingwood, Ranelagh, and Garth Hill. My approach is particularly focused on making English accessible, engaging and achievable. I am experienced in helping students who lack confidence, struggle to understand what is expected of them, or simply need more individual attention than is possible in a busy classroom.
Whether it is Shakespeare, poetry, unseen texts, creative writing, essay technique or examination preparation, I aim to break difficult concepts down into manageable steps and help students develop the skills and confidence to work independently. I am also very aware of the pressures faced by students in modern secondary schools. With classes sometimes containing 30 or more pupils, it can be difficult for teachers to provide the individual support that every child needs. Private tuition can provide the additional time, explanation and encouragement that can make a significant difference to a student`s progress.
Availability: I generally tutor weekday evenings and weekends. Am available during both holiday periods and term times. I work both remotely and through one-to-one visitations.
I believe that successful tuition requires more than simply completing worksheets each week. I establish where a student is currently performing, identify the areas that are holding them back and then work systematically towards improvement.
Most students I teach are expected to complete at least one additional homework activity each week. This allows me to assess whether the skills covered during the lesson are being applied independently and provides a clear way of monitoring progress.
I also believe that regular communication with parents is important. I am happy to discuss progress, identify areas for further development and agree strategies that can support the student between lessons.
Before beginning regular tuition, I would normally arrange an informal initial meeting with the student and parent or guardian. I would also ask to see some of the student`s existing schoolwork so that I can gain an understanding of their current ability, strengths and areas for development.
My aim is simple: to help students become more confident, more capable and ultimately achieve the grades they are capable of achieving.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: I have taught English at a range of Berkshire secondary schools including Edgbarrow; I was English co-ordinator and subject lead at Bracknell & Wokingham College for over ten years where I specialised in supporting students achieving their GCSE and IGCSE English Language qualifications; I was later promoted to head of English at Farnborough College in Hampshire. I also teach GCSE and A Level media and film studies (WJEC/EDUQAS) and also have considerable experience teaching Functional Skills at entry level through Level 2.
In more recent years, I have returned to secondary teaching and presently teach at a small independent school on the Bracknell outskirts. I privately tutor and undertake examination board work around my teaching hours, both I which I have been doing in excess of ten years.
