Information about Joseph
I`m an enthusiastic and experienced A-level maths tutor. I`ve worked and taught in Universities for 20 years, and I`ve been tutoring A-level mathematics for the last five years. I also work with Action Tutoring, providing online GCSE-maths for schools containing disadvantaged students.
My tutoring sessions are generally informal and relaxed, and provide a very different learning environment to a school classroom. In particular, I welcome questions and interruptions. I also encourage my students to show me their working on the questions they *can`t* do! Tutorials are most effective when we are both working at the level where the student is struggling but not yet completely lost.
I base my approach on an assessment of the students current level of achievement and diagnosis of any underlying conceptual difficulties impeding progress. Before the lessons begin, I arrange a video chat to talk to the student and find out his or her strengths and weaknesses. I set the tutorials around the student`s own preferences and needs, focussing on areas the tutee tells me need extra attention.
I believe that confidence is important to academic success __ especially in mathematics where anxiety can affect student performance. I find that helping students to see their own potential can enable dramatic improvements in performance. I enjoy providing clear explanations and breaking down concepts in a simple and straightforward way. Often, tutoring means that students find themselves not only better at problem solving, but also finding the subject rewarding and (even!) enjoyable.

Experience: I have twenty years of teaching experience in higher education, including the Universities of Cambridge, York and Leeds, including plenty of very small group (1-1 to 1-3) tutorials, and a couple of years experience of tutoring A-level students at a 1-1 level.
