Information about Edward
My name is Ed. I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with First Class Honours in Physical Natural Sciences. The Natural Sciences Tripos allowed me to develop expertise in a range of subjects by allowing me to study Mathematics, Physics, Geology and Materials Sciences at an undergraduate level. I specialised in Materials Sciences, achieving a First, before completing a Management Studies course at the Judge Business School. Experiencing the unique supervision structure at Cambridge has enabled me to appreciate the huge benefit that 1:1 tutoring can bring to improving students understanding and confidence.
My tutorials aim to boost confidence by identifying and encouraging strengths while systematically working through any misconceptions or problems in understanding that may be holding the student back. At the core of this, is encouraging effective communication and taking the time to understand a student’s approach to a topic.
What might a typical tutorial look like? Firstly, for any given topic, I like to give a small ‘workshop’, talking through underlying theory and ensuring the student understands core concepts. Next, I will work through examples with the student, before allowing them to complete some examples by themselves. This gives me the chance to identify and correct any misunderstandings the student may have. Once the student has got to grips with a topic, I will set questions for the student to complete themselves, in order to develop confidence away from the tutorial setting.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: I am an enthusiastic and engaging tutor who has experience tutoring Maths and Physics at GCSE and A-Level. As my school`s Physics Ambassador, I have also gained experience producing independent teaching materials for students who require a fresh outlook on a subject to better understand it.
