Information about Katy

Fully Qualified secondary school mathematics Teacher
For as long as I can remember I always wanted to teach and Maths has always been my favourite subject and so many of the things I have chosen to do have been to gain as much experience as I could to help me to my end goal of becoming a great teacher. I began tutoring primary school children Maths whilst I was still completing my A levels and took an internship in a school whilst I was at University. Throughout my education I have always been eager to help my peers with topics they were struggling with and when I would babysit as a teenager I seemed to always find something to teach the little ones I was looking after. I spent 3 years living in Nottingham studying Maths at NTU where I graduated with 1st Class Honour`s, then continued my studies at St Mary’s in Twickenham where I completed my PGCE. I am now a fully qualified secondary school mathematics teacher with experience working in the classroom with both GCSE and sixth form students.

I currently work as a secondary school teacher and my experience has given me the knowledge and skills required to help my students to build their confidence in maths and reach their full potential and become confident mathematicians. As students approach GCSE and A-level exams I believe that it is important for students to familiarise themselves with how exam questions are worded and what to look out for (for example key words and common questions that trip students up) and what to expect when they sit an exam. To this end for those students in year 11 or sixth form, past exam questions would play an important role in my tutoring sessions as I believe that helping students to carefully read and fully understand what these questions are asking and also understanding what the mark scheme requires of them in order to be awarded full marks is the key to success.

For all ages it is important to build on prior knowledge so I will have conversations with my students about what they already know and test their knowledge when we begin a topic. I believe it is important to choose the questions I ask carefully, thinking about the intended impact each question will have on the students learning. For example, I often choose questions or tasks which will expose any misconceptions to enable me to address them.

All students are different and have varying learning needs so all sessions will be completely adapted to each individual student and what they need to make progress.
