Information about Lee

Dr. Lee - Bsc (1st Class Hons), MSc, Ph.D., FRM, PGCE

Lee is a Mathematical Physicist graduate of University College Dublin, Queen Mary, King`s College and University College London. During his academic studies, he taught mechanics and mathematical methods to both architects and engineers and, as an associate lecturer for the Open University in Ireland, the ";Understanding space and time"; and Astrophysics modules. Lee has 15 years of commercial experience, initially within Cryptography and Risk departments of Banks in Brussels and London, latterly as a Risk manager in investment houses in the city of London. Thereafter he taught Physics and Mathematics, both the International Baccalaureate in an international school in France as well as the British curriculum in London and Valencia, Spain.

As a teacher with a doctorate in mathematical physics, I am a well resourced and sympathetic tutor. In addition to exploring the best approach to both interpreting and solving a problem, I will always additionally look to promote a sense of inquiry in my tuition. I can also provide an accelerated summary across course content that builds pupil confidence.

With an appreciation of the motivation for studying certain topics, my students are not just learning recipes to solve problems. By developing a deeper understanding of the material, they are enabled to answer questions that to the unwary, at first sight, may look like drawing from untaught material. By relating material from across the courses as a whole I can breed the necessary confidence for my pupils to tackle hitherto unseen contexts that will always come up in the exams.

Being a bit of a late bloomer I feel it is my being inquisitive and resilient over the years that has allowed me to progress in both my academic and business careers.

Having experience of more than ten years of graduate research means that I can bring both broad and deep contexts to my tuition. I can tie together disparate themes and concepts, connecting ideas that may appear unrelated due to the linear and modular way that they are invariably taught at schools. Having a deeper insight and broader perspective is critical to making informed choices in a student’s progression onto university.

Experience: I have taught Physics and Mathematics for over 5 years through Key stage 3, IGCSE to A level and IB at school in West and North London, Lille- France, and Alzira-Spain. I am familiar with AS and A2 Physics (OCR and Edexcel). I have QTS through a PGCE from the Institute of Education prior teaching experience and a Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics from Kings, London.

In my tutoring I compliment direct teaching with inquiry-based learning, enabling pupils to develop and reflect on their learning, promoting a sense of inquiry with a reassuring sense of progression gained from addressing appropriate (exam) questions. I variously model new concepts, (sometimes silently) by applying amongst other variation techniques so as to incrementally extend my students’ understanding. My approach to tutoring is context-based, seeking to elicit self-awareness in students of their first appreciation of a concept. As such sometimes it can prove useful to focus on the confusions that arise from misappropriated everyday language into the Mathematical Sciences.

My tutoring materials try to better reflect the actual practice of mathematical physics all the while being acutely aware of the heavy cognitive burden that its progressive nature places on the student. I try to promote critical and creative thinking, revealing more than just recipes for solving problems rather emphasizing the need for student inquiry generating questions and ideas. To hone discussions around key sources of misconceptions, my tutees can access resources that I have developed and collated by way of a shared Google drive. In order to generate interest and consolidate learning, videos and simulations resources using Geogebra, Desmos, Physlet platforms can also be shared. I have also developed Diagnostic testing methods through Google forms as well as customized resources for various quiz platforms.

Having been a practitioner of Mathematics working in the Cryptography department of a smart card manufacturer in Brussels and as a risk modeler within the city of London, I have had varied life experiences that can feed practical content into lessons that I develop.

Over the last four years, I have taught IGCSE and A level as well as IB Mathematics and Physics at international schools in France and Spain. Classes include 7,8 Mathematics and Sciences, IGCSE Physics, AS Physics, year 12, Core 1,2 Mathematics, year13 Decision Mathematics, Thinking skills and Further Mathematics 1,2,3. Working with EAL students for the past four years I am sensitive to how language analogies and ambiguities sit at the heart of our mathematical understanding of the world. I have developed concept map materials to connect ideas and clarify subtle conceptual distinctions.

I was an Associate Lecturer for the Open University in Ireland through 1992-95.
I taught mathematics in Kenyan and Swaziland secondary schools and have been a teaching assistant for two summer Astronomy Schools for Talented Youth at Dublin City University.

I spent eleven-years in Mathematical Physics to Doctorate level tutoring at University College Dublin and Kings College London. There I taught applied mathematics, statics and mechanics to Architects, Applied Mathematics to engineers, Linear methods and programming skills to undergraduate Pure Mathematicians.

Lee gave a one-off session on AS Physics for my daughter. Lee is an experienced teacher and he had taken a lot of care over preparation including some teaching materials he brought with him. He helped to explain some of the ideas behind the syllabus and to identify some of my daughter`s difficulties.

Highly recommend.
My son was struggling with A level Physics and had little confidence in passing.
Thanks to Lee he now feels significantly more confident and has clearly benefited from the one to one tuition.
Lee truly does care and has passion for teaching, coupled with his impressive knowledge, manner and style of teaching I would certainly use his services again.
