Information about Rhys

My first time tutoring was back in 2011, whilst I was still studying Linguistics and Spanish a St. Catherine’s College, Oxford - and I have never looked back! Far from being a stopgap job, providing tuition quickly became my full-time job.

Spanish tuition - mostly for students sitting an exam or applying to Oxford / Cambridge - has been the biggest focus of my work, though I always hope for aspiring Linguistics students as well!

I am also an experienced examiner for Spanish GCSE and A-Level for a UK exam board.

For Spanish, I cover all exam boards for GCSE/IGCSE and A-Level, as well as all levels of Spanish B for the IB.

In Oxbridge season, I also regularly provide coaching and mock interviews at admissions-focussed events for both schools and the general public.

Tutoring and teaching are different skills, and it’s important to remember that. We can take advantage of the one-to-one rapport that tutoring provides, allowing us to be much more friendly - but equally as thorough - as what you may find in school.

When I’m not at work, I’m a big fan of cooking, hiking, weightlifting, and learning more languages (German and Icelandic are the current projects!).

Availability: I am a full-time tutor, so my availability is generally very good! The only big exceptions are Saturday morning, and Thursday daytime. I am also able to accommodate international clients as a result.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: For Spanish, I have probably taught over 1000 hours for GCSE, A-Level, and IB combined. Many of my students go up one or two grades (some as many as 4 grades!) relative to when they began working with me. This has covered all facets of the GCSE/IGCSE. For A-Level, I have extensivelty covered the majority of the A-Level texts and films that appear on the UK syllabus.

When covering Oxbridge admissions, I have over 750 hours’ experience. This has been (I estimate) 60% for Spanish, 30% for Linguistics, and 10% for other courses (including beginners’ languages, East Asian languages, and ASNaC). This includes every step of the application process, from course choice, to personal statement writing, to test preparation, to interview practice. This includes general subject exploration throughout the process.

As well as this, I have worked on approximately two hundred Oxbridge-focussed events with schools / events for the general public, and conducted over a thousand university mock interviews.

Very nice, knowledgeable, helpful and well-prepared. Couldn’t have asked for better help.

The sessions were really helpful, and the amount of resources was amazing. The tutoring helped me understand many areas of linguistics at a much greater level, and it was invaluable during the university application process - it definitely made a big difference within my application to Cambridge.
