Information about Max
Hi, I`m Max - I am a reliable, experienced tutor capable of inspiring students of all abilities.
In 2015 I graduated from my MPhys in Theoretical Physics and in 2019 I was awarded my PhD in Astrophysics for my research on solar flares. I have broad teaching experience over six years, from private tuition with students of all ages to maths seminars for modern apprentices to laboratory demonstrations at the University of Manchester. I am now a software engineer living in Edinburgh and also offer tuition in a variety of languages including Python and C++.

Maths and science curriculums in schools are typically taught in a dry, unapproachable, uninviting way. Usually, there`s a `one size fits all` solution to each problem and students are sent into exams armed with a single technique per type of question. I was fortunate enough to have excellent teachers who inspired my love of physics by showing me that every problem can be viewed from many different angles and tackled in a multitude of ways. Without this, I had found myself struggling against a brick wall of a maths problem, when all I had to do was walk around it - to find a different approach that made sense to me.
It`s this feeling that I have found so useful to impart to my students over the last six years: problems in maths and physics are always understandable, you might just have to look at them in a different way.
My sessions aim to be relaxed but focused environments, where students are encouraged to explore problems and develop problem solving strategies that work for them. I set assignments for my students as needed, so that we do not waste lesson time completing questions in silence. I tailor my lesson plans to the student`s exam board specification, and where appropriate I like to bring in some elements from beyond the syllabus to help with engagement.

I have a proven track record of success with students of all abilities and ages achieving their goals and increasing their appreciation for the subject. In the past three years, all of my A Level Mathematics students achieved their predicted grade with more than half surpassing it.
For students interested in programming: notable successes include one mature postgraduate student with no previous programming experience. After a year of my Python lessons, she conducted a successful Python-based data analysis masters project, passing with Merit.
