Information about Luka
Hello! My name is Luka, I have been tutoring maths and physics online for students at KS3, GCSE and A-level levels for the past 5 years. I hope to inspire as many students as possible with my passion for maths, science, economics, engineering and technology!
At school I achieved A* grades in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry A-Levels and went on to achieve a 1st in an integrated masters in maths at Imperial College London. I spent over 3 years working in financial services and became the team lead for around 15 analysts. The last 1.5 years of this job was conducted remotely which gave me a lot of experience in operating, communicating and training individuals online.
My passion for teaching stems from my eagerness to be constantly learning and the satisfaction that comes with helping others gain insights in understanding and new enthusiasm for a subject. If you can enjoy learning then the whole experience becomes a lot more positive! I feel that my university studies and subsequent industry experience have given me the knowledge and communication skills necessary to be able to motivate students and help them to succeed beyond their presumed potential.
My broad aim when tutoring is to provide students with a stronger fundamental understanding of the relevant concepts in a subject, such that they are better equipped with knowledge and confidence to tackle problems that they have not seen before.
Critically important to achieving this is appreciating a students current understanding in a subject so that learning can begin at the correct level with robust foundations and fundamental gaps can be addressed. This is something that I try to continuously evaluate through informal discussions and exercises with the pupil, so that learning continues at the correct pace and in the correct direction.
This naturally gives rise to teaching approaches that vary between students such that knowledge/understanding gained per hour is maximised for each student. I would rather spend an hour ensuring comprehension of one idea than covering many topics that are not properly understood by the student.
Nevertheless, once I am confident that a topic is well understood by a student, I will not hesitate to try building on it with the next topic. In general I think it can be beneficial to mentor students beyond their age. Learning year 10 maths makes year 9 maths a whole lot easier and is not fundamentally more difficult, just requires a solid grasp of the latter.
Availability: Available every day subject to other bookings.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: My previous tutoring experience includes:
- Preparing a student for KS3 Maths and Science before she began secondary school, and ultimately helping her to comfortably exceed year 7 expectations
- Helping a home-schooled student without a natural talent in maths achieve a passing grade in foundational GCSE maths
- Assisting a student making the challenging transition from GCSE to A-Level maths fill gaps in his understanding of the fundamental concepts, and gain confidence in his abilities such that top grades became achievable
