Information about Joanne

I am a highly motivated and enthusiastic science graduate who has gained a lot of experience of 1:1 tuition in maths and science. I am passionate about learning, self-development and enabling others to reach their full potential. I believe that every student deserves to receive the appropriate level of teaching required to succeed and for a lot of students this is only achieved by 1:1 tuition.

I studied as a mature student with The Open University whilst I worked in various roles in education. I have an honours degree in life science. I studied biology, evolution, psychology and produced two scientific research projects. The Open University is very innovative and it taught me many new skills and different approaches to learning. It was not until I studied for my degree that I realised how valuable practising past questions was to exam success.

I am a patient tutor and it is very important to me that students feel confident enough to let me know if they do not understand anything. I appreciate that students learn differently and at different speeds. By building good relationships with the students that I tutor, they reach their full potential.

I enjoy tutoring students of all ages:
- younger students benefit from gaining a good understanding of mathematical concepts which provides them with a solid foundation to build upon. I reinforce the concepts with fun games, such as, `pairs` using equivalent fractions.
- GCSE students benefit from receiving additional teaching, revising topics and from practising exam questions. I teach a comprehensive list of GCSE topics to ensure that students gain the ability and confidence to attempt every exam question. This methodology enables me to discover which areas students need to focus on to strengthen their abilities so that they are prepared for their exam. I also teach students exam technique.
- adult learners benefit from addressing missing knowledge and from being taught different techniques which are different to the ones that they struggle with.

I have a proven track record in improving academic skills and abilities. A student that I previously tutored moved up three maths classes in less than one year. Every GCSE student that I have tutored has passed their exam, improving on the grade that they achieved in their mock exam, the majority of students by two grades.
I have always received great feedback. Parents report that their children begin to enjoy maths again. This is very important because liking a subject aids learning.

Experience: I have worked as a personal maths and science tutor for the last three years. The majority of the students that I tutor are GCSE students, although I have tutored students from the age of 8 to adults. The students that I have tutored have done brilliantly at school and college. I have seen their confidence levels increase in a short period of time.
I have previously worked as a senior teaching assistant for [contact detail removed] (Maths and English) for 5 years. During my five years, I tutored students of various ages and abilities. Some of the students were very advanced and enjoyed the extra stimulation that Kumon provided. Other students had mild special educational needs and benefited from an individual learning plan that enabled them to build up their confidence.

I have volunteered at an adult learning workshop which enabled mature students to study GCSE maths. I tutored the students in all areas of GCSE maths and encouraged the students to push themselves and to `have a go`. The students that I worked with built up their confidence which meant that they continued studying at home after the workshop had finished. This was something that they had not done before.

Testimonials:

`Since having maths tuition, my grades have improved and I have moved up three sets in school. But most importantly, my confidence has grown and I now enjoy a subject that used to make me feel frustrated. Thanks Jo, for your support` - Lucy
(Lucy achieved a 3 in her mock maths exam, she achieved a 6 in her GCSE)

`I cannot praise Jo highly enough for her knowledge and patience. My daughter was put down a maths set from 3 to 4 in Sept 2014. We were fortunate enough to find Jo and have maths tuition lessons 1 hour per week. Over the year, my daughter Lucy has now been advised that she is being moved into top set from September 2015. Lucy has gained a lot of confidence having the one to one tuition. She has been able to go back to basics with Jo and move forward with a better understanding. Jo has been able to revive Lucy`s interest in maths and help her reach her full potential` - Mrs Millward (Lucy’s mum)

`Joanne has really helped me to understand` - Ben
(Ben achieved a D in his mock maths exam, he achieved a B in his GCSE)

`Ben has really improved with his tutoring. He was struggling in class to understand certain concepts of maths and did not seem to grasp some of the formulas. With his weekly tuition, his understanding grew and his confidence improved. One to one tuition was the best thing we did. Joanne is professional and very understanding of each pupils needs. I would definitely recommend Joanne. Whatever his results are, we know she gave him the best chance possible and he has worked to his full potential` - Mrs Grafton (Ben’s mum)

`My god-daughter was struggling and started panicking over maths. She received a fail in her mock. From then until the exam (3 weeks), Joanne tutored her, she gave her confidence and direction to tackle the exam resulting in the GCSE pass she needed for her college place. I would definitely use her again for my daughter` - Ms Corcoran

Joanne really helped our son to gain extra confidence with his Maths GCSE studies. She set extra work and helped him to focus on what was important. She went out of her way to be flexible in timings and was always positive with him. Thanks a lot Joanne and we wish you every success for the future.

Joanne has an easy going relaxed manner which puts students at ease. My daughter actually says she enjoys the sessions which is a first for maths. Joanne seems to have given our daughter her confidence back. Recommended.
