Information about Tom

I am an enthusiastic and passionate elite Mathematics tutor with over 1500 hours and 6 years of professional one-on-one tutoring experience and a degree in Mathematics from the University of Warwick (2017). Since graduating, I have worked extensively in person and online with the full range of ages and ability, from KS2 (under 10) to Cambridge entrance exams, all with extremely high levels of success and satisfaction. My specialism is in boosting confidence and deepening mathematical understanding for GCSE and A Level students, and I love working with motivated students who are curious and want to learn.

"Tom is outstanding as a tutor. I can not believe the difference in my daughter’s confidence with her maths in such a short period of time. He is also kind and genuinely cares about his students emotional well-being."
"Tom is reliable and professional and the sessions are a real confidence boost"
"Tom is able to explain a topic in multiple ways until the student gets it, something my son’s college was unable to do. Our son got an excellent grade at A level and we feel much of that achievement is down to Tom’s knowledge and teaching style."
"Reliable, helpful and ‘very patient’ (her words). We would warmly recommend him!"

I am particularly adept in curriculum mathematics, having achieved 95+ on all my Core modules in Maths and Further Maths at A Level, and I can readily teach co-curricular A Level examinations such as STEP, MAT, AEA and the Senior Maths Challenge (among others). I also achieved highly in Physics, with 100% in the two final papers, so if you need help with this (particularly the Applied Maths side of Physics) then I am very able and ready to help.

I attained 3 A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics at A Level, so I know exactly what is required for the top grades. I also achieved Highest Ever In School for the Senior Maths Challenge and a Distinction in AEA Mathematics. My MAT grade was enough to earn me a non-STEP offer from Imperial College London, and I passed all three STEPs, STEP I in Lower Sixth.

Beyond my grades, I work hard and have a dedication for my subject and my students. Mathematics is the cornerstone of every science, and a proper understanding of it is essential. I love sport (particularly BHAFC) and cars, and keep up with the latest technology.

Experience: Throughout my education I have tutored those younger than me and worked with some of the brightest young minds, some of whom became top of their year in the highest ranking universities. I am flexible in tutoring a range of abilities, and have experience from mentoring Year 6 students just learning algebra, through to Year 12 students starting A Levels, all the way to STEP tutoring and preparing for Oxbridge interviews and entrance exams.

Most of my tutees are A Level or GCSE students and this level is where my speciality is, however I am very adept at working with self-motivated younger students, particularly those who are looking for a deeper mathematical understanding.

In 2019 I started a role in a local state primary school where I work with KS2 pupils during Maths lessons and prepare them for their Maths SATs. I have had a very positive response from this by teachers, parents and pupils, and I have seen through school-collected data a huge improvement in mathematical understanding in the cohorts that I have worked with.

During school hours I am also a primary Maths tutor on the National Tutoring Programme, working with disadvantaged students to help close the learning gap and boost their mathematical understanding and confidence. Again, I have seen huge improvements in the students that I work with, and I hope I have given them a desire to continue to explore the mathematical world.

I am a strong believer that every student is different, and that they each have their own way of learning that works best for them. A great academic record does not necessarily mean a great tutor, however I think that I have the right approach whereby I learn first how the student works best, then implement learning techniques which will drive the best results and deepest understanding.

I also strongly encourage an inquisitive and questioning behaviour, where the student is aware that not everything I say should be taken for granted. The key skill universities are looking for is an inquisitive nature, so I do not lecture to the student, I let them give feedback and treat them as an equal, and in most cases the sessions will be student-led. This way they develop an ability to think for themselves, keeps them thinking throughout the session, and means we focus on the areas they want to improve.

The first session is normally spent working out the best tutoring technique, how motivated or confident the student is and what ability they are. In some cases I like to set small amounts of homework which help develop a deep understanding of the topic, however I expect most of my students to be motivated enough to work on their own.

From here, each session can build on the previous and will depend a lot on the current progress of the student, upcoming examinations, strengths and weaknesses and how confident they are. In general, I like to go through the content as fast or as slow as necessary, and then do some past paper or textbook questions with the student. Every student is different and will have different needs, and I am more than capable of adapting to each and every one.

Has been incredibly helpful in enhancing my skills in mechanics and pure maths as well as providing useful tips that I hadn’t come across before. I particularly find it helpful being able to take initiative when solving maths problems which really helps to consolidate my learning. Would recommend to others without a doubt!
