Information about Sam

I have been a private tutor since 2015, when I graduated with a BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. Over the past two years, I have helped students prepare for 11+ exams, GCSEs, A-Levels, the IB Diploma and university admissions exams and interviews.

In my final year of university, I taught Practical Criticism and Literary Theory to first-year undergraduates: a challenging course that requires the development and synthesis of complex ideas. Prior to this, I tutored AS-Level and KS3 Drama, and KS3 English.

Modernist poetry, literary theory, and the theatre of Early Modern England are my academic specialties. I tutor English and Theatre Studies at all levels, Spanish to A-level, and Maths to GCSE. I also love helping my students prepare for the demands of university admissions tests and interviews.

I am currently studying at L`École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. For this reason, I am only available to teach UK-based students online, and can travel anywhere within Paris` Périphérique.

My work as a freelance theatre director also gives me first-hand experience of the ways in which a literary text can be brought alive through performance.

I also hold a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification (FSMQ), which introduces students to the elegance and power of advanced mathematics. The course examines equivalent material to the first modules of A-Level Maths.

I produce bespoke lesson plans and resources to ensure that the unique needs of each student are met. I aim to create a challenging but inspiring environment by blending goal-focussed activities with enriching discussions. This nurtures each student’s creativity and critical awareness while giving them the confidence to express their own perspectives on literature. I find it a joy to support students as they develop unique and invaluable ideas.

I have extensive experience working with children with special educational needs and can teach students with learning difficulties in a manner that is effective and exciting. The strategies that I have devised for these students are beneficial even for those without special educational needs.

Availability: Weekdays after 18:30 and all day at weekends.

Willing to travel: 50 miles

Experience: In my final year of university, I taught Practical Criticism and Literary Theory to undergraduates. Supervising such a challenging course quickly taught me how to guide students in the development and synthesis of complex ideas, allowing me to support each individual within a classroom setting.
