Information about Priya
I am presently working as a Doctoral researcher at Birmingham City University and have over fifteen years of experience in teaching Maths. I graduated at University of Greenwich with BSc (1st Class) in Mathematics and post graduated from University of Canterbury Christ Church. I have been quite passionate about teaching Maths from KS3, KS4 to KS5. I always mainly focus on making the lessons interesting. I have a proven record of good pass rates.
I have a broad range of teaching experience, from extensive teaching and individual mentoring to teaching Functional skills maths, GCSE maths and Engineering maths.
I choose content and activities that are both significant and challenging for the students so that they are stimulated to think beyond their comfort zone and feel involved in their learning process. Similarly, the activities and class discussions I facilitate encourage students to make connections between their field of study and other disciplines. Collaborative learning is also central to my teaching philosophy to promote reflective thinking and improve the students communicative and trans-cultural skills.

Experience: My teaching experience extends for over 20 years but the last ten years have been phenomenal in my teaching career. I have attended various CPDs and developed my skills in terms of making lessons engaging and motivating. Realizing the importance of engaging students in their learning I have used various techniques to that effect including tactile activities, group discussions, differentiation to challenge able students, contextualizing mathematical concepts and much more. My teaching has been more inclined to a student-centered approach.
I have been working with a diversity of students with different levels of ability and needs. For example, some students need to do more on past paper style questions on their own before checking the marks scheme whereas some students prefer to check the proper method before they try. I always give priority for their preference;; my teaching environment is always friendly;; so students could ask as many questions. This style gives them the pace to understand each and every step. Particularly for AS and Level students, either techniques of approaching the questions could differ question to question. But, I always keep encouraging them to identify the theory behind the questions. This kind of teaching style has been working very well and most of my students got higher grades in their GCSE and A-Level exam. Some of them studying at excellent(the University of Warwick, University of Oxford) universities as well.
I have also learned and become an effective user of various IT systems including: proSolution, proMonitor, moodle and others. Moreover, I have learned, through CPD, and started using the educational websites mymaths and mathswatch for my lessons, which I find very effective, in setting tasks (homework) on a weekly basis. I have a very good working knowledge of assessment and teaching resources.
