Information about Samantha

I am a fully-qualified, experienced Geography teacher who has taught for the last five years at Godolphin and Latymer School, London, and before that I was the Subject Lead for Geography at Hammersmith Academy. I have a first class BSc in Geography from Durham University. I am currently taking a break from full-time teaching to look after my one year old daughter but I am still interested in working with students in the available time that I have.

My focus over the last five years has been working with A Level students who wish to go on to study Geography, Geology or Environmental Sciences at prestigious universities. Having worked in one of the leading academic independent schools in London, I am well practiced in tutoring, mentoring or coaching students who wish to aim high. In addition to ensuring that my students have the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve their very best in their examinations, I also aim to instill a love and appreciation of the subject and learning that will set students up for success in their next steps. Practically, I have extensive experience with designing and teaching schemes of work, creating resources, building effective exam-skills as well as guiding students through writing their personal statements, preparing for university admissions testing and Ox-Cam interviews. While this has been my focus, I am also open to tutoring any students who may need support or want to develop their interest in the wider world and challenge their thinking!

I am a ‘proper Geographer’ meaning I have been on many wet field trips in full-waterproofs and wellies measuring the flow-rate of rivers in Wales, marching up mountains in the Lake District to find a good example of a glacial landform and even measuring the impact of earthquakes on rural communities in Nepal. This enthusiasm for understanding the world around us comes through in my lessons and tutorials! I am interested in sustainability and the environment, and led the Sustainability Committee at Godolphin and Latymer School for the last five years.

Availability: I am available to tutor online between 1-2.30pm on weekdays and in the evenings from 7pm. I may also be able to tutor at weekends and other times during weekdays on a case-by-case basis.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I am a fully qualified secondary Geography teacher who has been teaching for over eight years. I have a First-Class BSc in Geography from Durham University and a PGCE in Secondary Geography from the University of Nottingham. For the last five years, I having enjoyed teaching Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level Geography at Godolphin and Latymer School, London. Before that I was the Subject Leader for Geography at Hammersmith Academy, London. I have also marked GCSE Geography exam scri pts for the AQA exam board.

I have taught a number of GCSE and A Level syllabus` including international qualifications and I have a good understanding of the International Baccalaureate, having worked in an IB school. As an experienced classroom teacher, I have years of experience and up-to-date training in the latest subject knowledge, exam-criteria, effective feedback and marking, developing essay skills and understanding different students` needs. In addition to my years of classroom experience, I have also privately tutored a variety of students from Key Stage 3 through to university level working for award-winning London tutoring agencies such as Bonas MacFarlane and Minerva Tutors.

I am experienced in working with a range of students both in school and privately; from mentoring very high-achieving students to prepare for Oxford and Cambridge University interviews to working with students who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
