Information about Laura
CLASSES
In my classes, you won`t get strict step-by-step instructions to arrive at a predetermined image. Why? Because I believe you can do better. I believe that each one of us holds great creative potential and it is my aim to help you unlock it and learn how to use it.
Private classes are tailored to you to where you are at and where you would like to go. My role is to equip you with valuable knowledge and skills and guide you to understand the resources and creativity you hold within, apply these, and then deepen and expand them.
We begin with a consultancy session; much like an informal chat on your / your child`s ideas, interests, and aims, and a few exercises. I will observe, analyse, and then suggest a way forward which we discuss and decide on together. You / your child may choose to focus on creative expression, artist development, technical skills, theoretical knowledge
but usually we combine all of these in different measures, and a good laugh too! Additionally, as my own work often blends art and science, I am very open to cross-disciplinary practices and hybrid learning.
I also mentor young artists with their portfolios and projects as they apply to study at university. My students success rate in being offered a place on their first choice courses is 93%.
If you have any questions or special requests, dont hesitate to get in touch!
WHERE
Classes are normally given in my home studio in the Richmond area which is equipped with a vast array of art supplies, photography and film gear, a sewing machine and fabrics, and a good collection of books for inspiration and research. They usually last 1h-2h and are given weekly, but I am open to other requests.
Availability: To be discussed.
Willing to travel: 1 miles
Experience: Art:
My drawings, paintings, photographs, films, and performances have been shown internationally for more than 15 years at venues including the Whitechapel Gallery, the V&A, the Royal Albert Hall, the BFI, the Los Angeles 1650, and the Scottish Art and Film Festival. Some of my artwork is also held in the Central Saint Martins Museum Collection.
Teaching:
I have taught Fine Art, Design, and Contemporary Art History to children and adults in a variety of contexts and countries, from rural Morocco to the prestigious Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland. Now based in London, I offer private classes and give lectures at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and at UCL.
Research:
My work as a researcher focuses on art as activism, art as social practice, art for health, and the intersection between art and science. I am an Honorary Associate Researcher of both UCL and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at Kings College London, and an Honorary Research Fellow of NIHR ARC NWL.
Education:
I graduated with First Class Honours from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, with Distinction from my MSc in Creative Arts and Mental Health at Queen Mary University of London, and I am now a PhD researcher studying the use of creative practices to heal trauma.
